I attend a rigorous college prep school outside of New York City. We send 100 percent of our students to college, and the curriculum is definitely much more difficult than your average high school. Don't mean to sound rude, just throwing that out there.

Class Rank: N/A, school doesn't rank, but, a look at a slightly confusing GPA distribution graph would put me at least in the top 20, if not higher.

I am planning to take what my school calls 'Focus', a year long research project/thesis in something you love. I hope to tackle an aspect of politics and the media, and it would involve writing a 25 page paper first semester and then going out into the field and actually working in that area before presenting this project to a panel of experts.

EC's:
--Student Government (My strongest point):
- President of the Student Body, running uncontested, first time in school history.
- I was the vice-president of the Student Body junior year.
- I was the president of my grade for Freshman and Sophomore year.

I've helped initiate major rule changes, written and delivered big speeches, argued in front of faculty meetings, and been a general advocate for the Student Body.

-I interned for the Barack Obama for President campaign in Paterson, NJ, compiling over 125 hours of service. I was an assistant to the field organizer, and helped run the office, train volunteers, set up and take down events, etc. I was also left in charge of phone banks and canvassing events and helped volunteers sometimes 3 times my age understand how to be a part of the campaign. I was one of four field office administrators in Paterson on Election Day, the only one who happened to be a minor. Great letter of rec from one of my supervisors/field managers. Will also be a focus of my essay.

-National/International Editor of the school newspaper: written extensively on American politics, edited articles, managed lay out of section.

-Play guitar in private lessons, school band, the pit orchestra for the musicals, and small cafes and restaurants.

I am potentially working in the local assembly persons office as well this summer.

I am a tour guide for my school, all four years.

I've run cross country all four years of high school, varsity for three.

My US AP History teacher will be writing my recommendation, and he is also the main faculty adviser to the student government, so he has a double perspective on me, will vouch for me hard. Counselor will do the same.

I don't know how to explain it, but I have become a sort of natural leader at my school I think any interviews would go well. You guys probably get this a lot, but I feel like my numbers (not a great sophomore year, more B's than A's), and my struggles with SAT I Math are bogging me down from being a really good candidate.

I know my numbers are low, but its just up my alley interest wise and a reach for anybody, so I thought I'd ask.

the B’s and math SAT grades are hurting you. Aim for all A’s first quarter sr year to prove you have potential and aim for well above a 600 in math

Please please please please PLEASE bring your math score up. Some kids were scoring 580 for the Hopkins summer camp in 6th grade. The best route for you would be to practice math and ramp up your GPA.

I want to be honest with you - 3.45 is definitely in the ding range. I had a 2300+ and a 3.4-3.5 (top 10%) and was rejected coming out of HS, just to put it into perspective.

The math score and GPA are low (math especially).

Even at the toughest high school imaginable, a 3.45 is going to be a very big hurdle to surmount. And this obviously isn’t a case of a disastrous freshman year, and great news from then on, your difficulties clearly continue all through sophomore year. Your EC’s are good enough that you would definitely have been competitive with a higher GPA an test scores, but I would definitely encourage you to look to other schools.

a “tough” high school is really your own opinion-and they dont give a cr@p about your opinion.
a 3.45 will hurt and your math score will not help. essentially, your SAT is 1340 because they do not consider writing. that isnt a strong score, but dont worry-YOU CAN BRING IT UP!!! work hard at it
but really, those are a lot of Bs. get straight A’s to look like ur on an upward curve

Yeah, one of my best friends had a 34, pretty good extracurriculars and incredible sat IIS on his act and a similar gpa to you and he didnt get into sfs (i go to a really selective private school on par with spence, horace mann, trinity and all those other nyc schools) . It’s all a crapshoot though. Keep your grades up and try and bring your act or sat up as well and you will have a shot
