<p>I wanted to know what is the path to becoming a general dentist in the US. Where I live it's very different, there is no 'undergraduate', you go straight to dental school. </p>

<p>I heard some people say that I only need 2 years of pre-dental studies and then go to dental school for 4 years. But I am a bit confused since I thought pre-dental would be at least 4 years. What are the requirements for getting into a good dental school?</p>

<p>Pre-dental coursework is fairly similar to the pre-medical requirements (2 semesters each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, general biology, general physics, and calculus). Some dental schools have additional coursework requirements, so check the specific requirements of the particular dental schools that might interest you. As long as you complete these requirements, you may major in whatever field you like, although most pre-dental students probably major in one of the biosciences.</p>

<p>Dental school typically is a 4-year program. Some dental schools admit students after two or three years of undergraduate study, but most students complete a 4-year undergraduate degree before entering dental school. Some of the schools that admit after three years of undergrad study only do so for students admitted to a special program from the undergrad college of the same university. Again, check the specific requirements of the particular dental schools that might interest you. Admission is based on GPA, dental admission test scores, interviews, recommendation letters, etc. </p>
