Hi everyone. I'm a new member here but have been reading for awhile. Would love some advice. My daughter's a junior and starting to think about college options. She's a year round competitive swimmer for 8 years now. Her times are probably more in line with DII or III schools but she really wants a bigger university experience, and those schools tend to be DI with a few exceptions (UChi, NYU etc). Some sites like Collegboard.org show that some of these DI schools have club swimming, but it's really not clear on the individual college websites. Does anyone know about this? If she were accepted at a larger university, like USC or BU, could she swim club if she doesn't make the varsity cut?

I am not familiar with swimming but from what I understand at the bigger universities the club option is there for people who cannot make the varsity squad but still want to compete. I don’t know if there are tryouts in swimming for club, I can tell you that at a D1 university near us they have mens club soccer. A kid I know tried out for the club team, he was very good and did not make it (on the A or the B club team) so it might be worthwhile to investigate the schools she is interested in specifically before pursuing them. Now on the flip side, if she is good enough to go D2 or D3, being part of a college team is pretty awesome and if she goes D2 or NAIA you can perhaps get scholarship $ to help out. Good luck

Like momof2010 says, I am close to a major university in Texas with the words “university” and “Texas” in its name . . . the men’s club soccer team there had over 100 people show up for try-outs for basically 4-5 open spots. So, while it’s not NCAA, it’s evidently still very competitive to get on the team.

hello
there are some D1 programs that might have swimmers who are at the same level/times as your daughter. certain conferences have slower times than others
below is a link where u can check times based on event, divisions as well as by conference
many d3 programs have swimmers whose times are faster or just as competitive as some of the D1 program swimmers
we are in the process of doing this with my junior son now

[Top Times](Top Times)

Thanks everyone, esp for the link. It will be an interesting process. I’m hoping her college counselor, who’s very linked in to college athletics, will also be a good guide.

Thank you so much all of you, esp. flashmo6 for that link to that site. My DD3 is 13 and thinks she wants to swim in college.

what are here times? how does she do at the big national competitions in the summer? She might want to think about a D1 program that isn’t super competitive at a quality school(like Indiana) or a D3 Kenyon maybe instead of a club team
