I would really appreciate any info on Dickinson.I am most interested in the academic offerings, social life, and the intensity of the work load. All info would be helpful. Thanks

Nice solid school. Daughter and I visited and the campus is spread out along several town blocks. Older buildings on the central block, newer dorms elsewhere. Beautiful library. Students are definitely on the preppy side and there is an active drinking/party culture. Academics are quite good, excellent study abroad options. The town of Carlisle is nice enough but not the hub of the world. Still, a nice choice if you are looking for preppy (my daughter isn't).

I keep hearing opposing messages reguardingDickinson. The first is that
it is a very heavy party school and the the second is that the work load is extremely intense. It doesn't seem possible that there is so much drinking when there is so much studying.Do you have any thoughts? Thanks

Catrina, there are some schools where people work hard AND party hard. Colgate is one example. Trinity College another. Dickinson may be another. Much Probably depends on your major and your high school preparation. When daughter asked our tour guide how much time she spent each night studying, she said 4 hours. On the other hand, a father here on CC sent his D. to Dickinson last fall. She was a top student but chose Dickinson because they offered her a nearly full scholarship. She transferred out after one semester - she didn't like the social life, didn't feel she fit in with the student body, and didn't feel her fellow students took academics as seriously as she did. Both stories are ancedotal, obviously, so your mileage will probably vary. Overall, however, my sense is that Dickinson has fine academics but is probably less intense academically than a school like Swarthmore or Grinnell.

A workmate's D is a senior there this year & she has loved the experience.

I assumed Dickinson's work would be far less intense than Swarthmore. In our school kids who are applying and attending Swarthmore are also applying to the ivy's,have 8-10 AP's, 1500+, and have amazing EC. Kids who apply to schools like Dickinson and Muhlenbeurg have much lower stats. Mostly A's and B's in honors and some Ap classes. Their scores are more like 1200-1300.
To me there is no comparison in the caliber of student(not caliber of person).
I am sure their is a wide range of students(ie the ones who recieve great merit scholarships) but I don't believe the average Dickinson student could compete with the average Swarthmore student I really don't believe that mostDickinson students are looking for as intense an academic experience but are serious about their work
