Dicuss Andover!

This thread is addressed to everyone who applied to Andover this year. I'm a current lower at Andover. Feel free to PM me and post your questions in this thread.

To accepted students,
Congratulations! Getting into Andover is no easy task, and you should be proud of yourself for getting in here. If you have any questions about anything at all about Andover, post in this thread or PM me.

At the same time, I urge to not let this go to your head. Take time to congratulate yourself, but remember that you are the same person you were yesterday. Be humble. If you know anyone who applied to prep school but didn't get in, be sensitive. They're going through a hard time.

To wait-listed or denied applicants,
I've been in your position. I applied to Andover for 9th grade, and was rejected. It was a tough blow to me. I had focused my life around getting into Andover, and not getting in was a tough blow. It wasn't easy for me to get back on my feet.

But I did. I gave myself two days where I let myself feel sorry for myself. After those two days, I didn't let myself feel down. I changed my attitude to a positive one. I decided I was going to make the best out of going to my public high school, and do the best I could there.

A year later, I received an acceptance letter from Andover.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can't change what your admission decision was. You didn't get in--plain and simple. But what you can change is how you deal with it, and your attitude towards it. It's easy in life to get into "ruts" and swallow yourself with self-pity and feelings of despair. If you allow yourself to be consumed by these feelings, you won't be successful, happy, or healthy at any high school.

Use this as an opportunity to become a stronger, better person. Give yourself a week to feel sorry and sad about this. Beat up your pillow, workout, cry a few times, watch "Titanic," or "Phantom of the Opera" or whatever you do to make yourself feel better. But once you're done with that, chin up and move on. Who cares that some prep school didn't let you in? It won't matter, because you can still be an amazing person without an Andover diploma. Work on making yourself that amazing person.

In the words of John Green--don't forget to be awesome. Because sometimes when faced with life's challenges, we can forget to be awesome.

@J2401J, thanks for writing this. Im still waiting for Andover to send my decision

J24601J - excellent post, very wise words. Thank you.

Very nice. Unfortunately I won’t have a second chance. I gotta refocus and just get into college. Technically the schools I want to go to are even tougher than the HADES group, but I think colleges focus less on profiles. Hopefully I’ll have good news next year.

I got accepted, and I have a lot of questions hahaha. I’ll PM you soon.

I was wondering if the people who applied to Andover for this year got their admissions decisions yet? Did only accepted people get it so far? Or did no one get their letter/Fed-Ex box yet? Also, was it supposed to come March 9 or March 10?

I write a blog for the admissions office at Andover and would encourage you all to check out my post about my own acceptance letter experience. Congrats to everyone and I hope you all pick the right school! (Andover, of course ;)

ralms2010- Very good article. I’m from NJ going to Andover, too. I had a very similar experience leading up to “the day”. Haha thanks for the link.

Thank you for this. I got wait listed and I was pretty upset.

May I ask, what have you done to get into Andover? What were some of the changes that you had to make to have a chance of getting into Andover, which you eventually did! I will be applying as a lower for fall 2014 and I am unsure of my chances and what I can do to have a higher chance of getting in.

1) maintain good grades and take hard classes: kind of self explanitory lol!
2)study for the ssat: no matter what people tell you, it counts for something and is one of the only factors of your application you can control! Just do lots of tests (there aren’t really any tricks so just buy books for the tests. It shouldn’t matter about the content.)
3) prepare for your interview: you want to be engaged! Find ways to ask questions and incorperate fun facts about yourself that you would like AOs to know.
4) start early!!!
5) make sure your essays are perfect!!!
6) don’t take on ECs for the sake of the app. Just huild upon what you already have!!
7) be yourself

That’s all I can think of right now. Best of luck and pm me if needed!!
