Let's obsess over why we didn't get in!

Hello. I applied to Exeter and Andover and was rejected from both. :( :P That's okay. I don't quite know how to explain what I want this thread to be about, so I'll give an example. (Whatever format is fine so long as it is readable.)

Both my interviews were fantastic and my SSAT was 99th percentile (that's the highest, right?). I think that the issue was in my recommendations or essays. All three teachers who wrote my recommendations adore me. The one thing that they could have marked me down for was irresponsibility, which is a big thing, I understand. I worked so hard on my essays and I was so proud of what I had come up with. It still has to be one of those two things. Another issue was that Exeter wanted a different teacher's recommendation. That was my mistake. Andover thought I hadn't done my interview, though I had. That was their mistake. I can see how the Exeter issue may have worked against me, but not the Andover one. Thoughts?

DISCLAIMER: I recognize that this might be a negative thing to do for a lot of people. I recognize that there were a gazillion highly talented students who applied. I recognize that I'm not stupid for not getting in, even if I feel that way now. Troubleshooting has always helped me in the past, however, so I'm going to do that.

Hotchkiss reject probably because my essays sucked for those.

Oh and Andover for same reason.

all my waitlists were probably because my recs weren’t outstanding enough

My recs were probably lame. Plus I’m from the same state as the school that wait listed me.

I forgot to add that I didn’t have straight As. I had quite a few Bs each quarter. My bad. #-o

MODERATOR’S NOTE: You are not supposed to use inappropriate words. And if asterisks show up, you need to edit your post to get rid of them. Otherwise, you might end up behind bars…

Over-represented state and the fact that I’m below the poverty level.

lol, I can guess exactly why S2 did not get admitted at one school. A week after submitting his applications, I was stuck in an airport, so to kill time I re-read his essays . That’s when I noticed a horrible and hilarious typo:

“I hope to continue my passion for XXX at ‘wrong-name’ school.”

Every time I think of it, it makes me chuckle. Surprised that the school was generous enough to WL him. That’s why on another thread I warned: don’t reread your essays!

@stargirl3 You know everyone on this site is rooting for you! #stargirlfan

@GMTplus7 Whoops! The schools I applied to are rivals and my parents can’t seem to get which is which so I FORBADE them from communicating with with either school.

Probably got waitlisted at Andover because my parents got the time wrong ,and I showed up one hour late for my interview. Oh well. It’s their loss anyways.

Haha I was surprised Loomis Chaffee accepted me after I went over their short answer word limit by like fifty words and their essay by like two hundred.

There are so many stargirl fans out there of which I am one.
Stargirl, you are truly are star!

Waitlists because

 • recs boring
 • essays medium
 • chinese
 • nothing too special.

@nothingimportant don’t f****** swear :smiley: lol

Hmm, let’s see…
My recs probably weren’t strong enough considering the fact I wan’t close with any of my teachers (30 person class, come on!).
My interviews were ok for Exeter and Deerfield, good for Andover and St. Pauls, excellent for Lawrenceville and Choate.
Essays for Exeter were too cliche, good for the rest.

Oh, and I’m asian, who needs FA.

Darn

Does FA work against applicants? Andover is needs blind, Exeter is pretty damn close…

FA might work against applicants indirectly. Less money = fewer opportunities. Fewer opportunities = fewer things on application…

More competitive pool to emerge from.

Milton waitlist is easy to understand… 6 kids from my school applied, day student, white, rushed essays, didn’t have a lot of passion for the school in the first place

I’m asian who needs financial aid. Plus I only got an 80% on the SSATS and I had okay essays and recommendations.

Probably got wait-listed to Deerfield & Choate because my sister’s at one of the BSes I applied to. Or maybe my extracurriculars weren’t as strong as some of the other applicants? haha i really have no idea. Not sure why I got rejected by Hotchkiss because I thought I did really well at the interviews but oh well:p
