Did anyone get their financial aid package back?

My EFC is 20,000 because my parents own the house. They only make 50000 a year. What sucks even more is that Penn State gave me a 3500 stafford loan- the same as Rutgers did, except Rutgers only costs 20,000. What is up with that? There's no way I can afford 31000 a year. Goodbye Penn State.

lol, apparently no OOS attending PSU, except people who are millionaires or people who got the bunton waller fellowship (full scholarship)

:-) this is funny, UP is going to be CC-free

Penn State is really not a great value for OOS. For approx $31K, you have lots and lots of choices.

That's not true. I'll still be here. =] By the way, my EFC was 0.

There certainly are non-millionaire types who attend PSU OOS (my son has many OOS friends there). IMO - it really depends on your choices. For example, if you don't qualify for financial aid and your state school options are weak, PSU's total cost might look good compared to privates like Syracuse or BU. Everyone has a different set of choices in front of them. Therefore, I think it's impossible to make a blanket statement about the value of any particular school. That said, it's really too bad that PSU can't be more generous with financial aid (certainly has something to do with the fact that it only gets 10% of it's funding from the state). If they had better financial aid, the OOS numbers would probably be much higher than the current 25% figure. Lot's of kids just move on...and do just fine with other choices.

No one ever said PSU would meet 100% of need. You have to be realistic - even if they only get 10% from the state that 10% is coming from the state taxpayers - who should and do benefit more than OOS.
However, that being said, there are two options if you are OOS - make sure you have a financial safety (your own "state" school?) or if you really insist on going to PSU then be ready to take out some loans. They also have a limited payment plan (gives you a few extra months) which I did not think was worth it for the fee. But it could be helpful if you really do not have the cash in August and December.

How/when do I pay for this summer? Their website says the summer bill will appear online around mid-April and the deadline to pay is May 4. I won't get my account until I go to FTCAP which is in mid-May. So how/when do freshmans pay for their first summer?

<a href="http://www.psu.edu/studentaid/applying/summerfr_steps12.shtml?reload%5B/url%5D">http://www.psu.edu/studentaid/applying/summerfr_steps12.shtml?reload</a>
You probably already saw this but basically if you did not get enough aid to cover your costs and cannot pay it yourself you need to arrange for loans. From the options they have it looks like this is what many people do.
As far as the payment deadline goes, it is likely May 4 because if you look at the summer session schedule for last year there were last minute FTCAP sessions for those kids who did not do it yet, and I am sure they would not be there if their bills were not paid. But, you should call and verify all this.
Finally, did you get any other finaid packages yet from other schools? How do those offers compare to PSU?

wow that is quite a difference. So UB is the cheapest to begin with and they gave you the most too (I know loans are "aid" but in comparing packages I do not consider them a great thing.)

Must be nice having all that financial aid! I got screwed over by the gov't! I have to say you either have a lot of money and you can afford to pay high tuition bills out of pocket or your poor and the gov't pays for you. If you middle class, like me, you just get screwed over!

Just asking, but where can I start applying for all these loans that Penn State and other student loans offered me, because I have no idea where this so called site is at in the Penn State finacial aid site.

<a href="http://www.psu.edu/studentaid/index.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.psu.edu/studentaid/index.shtml</a>
Office of Student Aid is a good place to start if there is not a link in your finaid packet.

Today I received a letter from the Office of Student Aid asking me to provide verification for my FAFSA form. It says to "submit a legible, SIGNED copy of IRS Form 1040..." Above that it says, "PARENT(S) 2006 INFORMATION: ("Parent(s)" includes parent and current spouse)."

What happens if only my mom works and filed taxes for 2006. My dad didn't do work, and therefore, had no taxes to file. Do I just send my mom's stuff?

yeah just send what u have. other schools asked me for my tax info but i don't have a job so they said send what applies.

i got mine today and i only got about 2200 on grants, i am not please
my efc was only 2900 idk how i only got so little
was anyone elses low like this?

i think the number on the bottom is how much you should expect to pay each year, not how much you are given

it says total award and then taht amount
