Dear Gavin:

The Office of Student Aid has recently processed your request for a
Federal Stafford Loan and has transmitted your loan eligibility to
AES/PHEAA for approval. Before your loan can be finalized, you must
sign your Federal Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)
electronically, using your federal PIN number.

You will need the following information in order to e- sign your MPN:
1. Your driver?€™s license number. 2. The name, address, telephone
number, and e-mail address (if available) of two adult references, one
of which should be a parent or legal guardian (if living). 3. Your
federal PIN number (if necessary, you may apply for a PIN number or
request a duplicate PIN number online at http://www.pin.ed.gov).

Please note that you must wait at least three business days
from the date of this e-mail before accessing your loan record to
electronically sign your MPN. Once you have collected the information
above, and at least three business days have passed, access our Web
site at http://www.psu.edu/studentaid/eaccess/empn.html and select
"e-sign your MPN" for further instructions.

If you experience any difficulties with the online e-signature
process, please contact AES/PHEAA e-Communication Center at 877-603-6010.

Best regards,

What does this mean? Can I e-sign it after I receive my financial aid package? And what is a stafford loan?

For your loan to be processed you have to sign the MPN. It is strange that you got this before you even got your package.
You have to wait at least three days before you go and try to sign it and I would recommend waiting until you get all your finaid packages in and decide for sure where you are going.
A Stafford loan is a student loan that everyone who fills out the fafsa is eligible for. Some people get it subsidized, meaning the fed govt pays the interest on it while you are in school, some do not, depends on need. The amount of how much you can borrow increases each year, it was $2625 freshman, $3500 sophomore, $5500 junior,$5500 senior but I am not sure if those are still the right amounts.
Definitely wait til you get all your packages before you sign it. I think my d waited until the summer to sign the MPN but do not know if you should wait that long.

Thanks for the helpful information, rlm919.

Thanks rlm919. I misread that email. I thought I had to sign it before they can send out my financial aid package. Is there anyway I can loan 30k/yr somehow?

I got mine today. They gave me 19,660. I was pretty suprised. They gave me 4700 in scholarships, 8510 in grants, and rest in loans and work-study. Is there anyway to not accept the loan/work-study that they offered me?

Not so fast, Killer. You might want to educate yourself regarding those loans first. Are any of them subsidized? Subsidized loans are usually a good deal for most students; they might be a good deal for you. Check out Salliemae.com to see the advantages (and disadvantages) of the different student loan types.

p.s. Nice going on the scholarship and grant. They really are more generous to OOS than us in-staters.

well he has to pay more so it would make sense for him to get more wouldnt it?

Is salliemae legit? I've never heard of it. The Signature Student Loan sounds like a good deal though. I just have to look more into it.

They only gave me 1k for this summer. LMAO!

You are only going for the 6 week session, right? So it should cost less than a regular semester. Also you probably can get a job on campus.

PennState only gave me a 1000 dollars and there is no way I can afford 31,000 dollars a year. I'm pretty mad at them right now. Doubt I'm going there

Yeah, I understand...my kids got nothing from PSU. When you hear about PSU's huge endowment and scholarships being established, you'd think more of it would filter down to the students...I guess it does to some students, but not to us. We found that the Ohio and NY state schools were very generous with aid, but the PA schools were not. It's amazing that it's cheaper for my kid to go to an out-of-state school than an in-state school. Oh well.

I'm getting 21K at Michigan w/o loans...and got less than 8K from PSU

I'm probably not going...this really sucks

i really hope a get a lot i have an efc of only 2900 so i hope it helps

my efc was 3100, so..unless you have great stats and get a bunton waller fellowship...dont get your hopes so high
