mommydeerest–thanks so much!! My husband is the home-school teacher; he gets all the credit. I couldn’t teach to save my soul. And, personally, I would not know the Anabasis of Cyrus from a hole in the wall. DH and the kids are the smart ones in the family. :)

Good news! At the UNC Admissions Blog, Dave Meredith says that additional scholarships will indeed be awarded (by snail mail) in the coming weeks – quite apart from the Scholarships Day program. There is yet hope for us NON-top-100 folks!!

Thanks again for the very kind words!! And best wishes – I know what you mean about staying in-state. That’s how we feel, too, which is why we keep hoping against hope…

Lady D. I realize that receiving scholarship money may be the only way for UNC to be a feasible option for your son, and I hope for your family’s sake he receives some, but the odds are against it . . . for him and the vast majority of other very strong, capable students UNC accepts. Nothing personal, but Carolina is loaded with kids who are exceptional and who don’t receive merit money. If a letter doesn’t come, don’t play the jilted parent. Instead, realize that Carolina’s strength relative to some of the other schools you’re considering is that at Carolina your son will be among many, many bright and high achieving (albeit unrecognized) students. There is definite value in that. In any case, good luck with the decision!

Well, I’ve noted that at least ONE who was invited to Scholarship Day has already said they won’t be attending UNC. So what happens to that $$$? My opinion is that lots of students apply to top schools just so they can say they were accepted & have no intention of actually attending, scholarship or no scholarship. I think the Admissions office tries hard to identify the students who truly gave a Carolina heart, but sifting through over 14K apps, it has to be hard to get it right & they know that. I’m sure they pay attention to who shows continued interest and allegiance & will do what they can to accommodate student needs as best they can.

Thanks, mommydeerest! And smbsmom – I am certainly not counting on merit aid. That’s why I said there is HOPE. Hope is not the same thing as certainty. ;-)

Dave Meredith said…
The Honors Program will send their invitation letters out by 2/11. Scholarship Day invitations were mailed on 1/26. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will make additional awards in the upcoming weeks. These awards are obviously not included in the Scholarship Day program. Recipients of scholarships will be notified by letter - not through their MyUNC portal.

Thank you, meadowbrook! Yes, that was the admissions-blog post I was referring to above. It means there’s hope for the rest of us! (Duly noted: hope; not certainty. ;))

Oops…I apologize! Your earlier post did not register when I had done a quick scan. That’s the hazard of monitoring multiple conversation threads from each of the multiple schools to which our son has applied :-)
