Did everyone get the letters in mail?

mommydeerest, was the scholarship application for the Pogue or Robertson? I know they started notifying students about the Pogue this year rather than accepting applications from anybody.

If UNC does not want DS enough to offer even the teeniest merit scholarship, then fuhgeddaboudit. There are other catfish in the sea.

I can understand how you might feel that way. However, remember that only 100 out of 14K early applications got a scholarship letter. So 99.3% of those that applied early will not get a scholarship from UNC (not counting Morehead, etc). UNC is still a fantastic value, especially in state, for a top 30 national university.

catdaddy

No doubt UNC-CH is a fantastic value, but, that value is relative to other offers on the table. Even as a fantastic value it would cost about $80K without scholarship money. While that is a value relative to full fare at other universities, it looks a little steep when you’ve been offered full rides elsewhere. That’s where some of us were hoping we’d see a little more love from UNC. Perhaps it will yet come and the letter will find it’s way into the Wilds of Stokes County with the post tomorrow and Lady D will have a tougher decision to make…;-)

Thank you, loring. And I very much wish the same for you and your son, needless to say.

Chapel Hill has a humongous endowment. Seems a shame they can’t spend a tad more of it on scholarships. Just sayin’.

Many of us are just middle-income enough not to qualify for need-based aid. In this economy, we have to think practically. Cost may not be the only variable, but it definitely is a variable.

Jessimo-no mention of any particular s’ship. Just that the deadline to apply for s’ship and financial aid is 3/1. I assume that everyone who was acceppted got this letter in their packet.

It W’s not an application but a letter.

Ok, I thought you meant that the letter was about scholarships, not financial aide in general. Thanks for clearing that up.

jessimo–It did mention scholarships, too. I guess they also give need based scholarships in addition to loans & grants. Again, I assumed everyone had this letter included in their acceptance packet. Did anyone else get it?

If it’s the sheet from the financial aid office telling you how to create your ONYEN and apply for financial aid, I got that. If not, I’m not quite sure what that sheet is.

No this was a separate letter (inside the large acceptance package) from the office of scholarships and financial aid, saying if he was interested in a scholarship or other financial aid package, he should apply by March 1. It was addressed to him by name, like the acceptance letter. The ONYEN instruction was another totally separate page in the packet. I haven’t heard anyone else elaborate on this particular letter. I don’t have it front of me right now or I would quote it. We haven’t submitted a FAFSA yet, so perhaps it only went to those acceptees who have not submitted one yet…not sure. I know the deadline for that is March 1, which the letter reiterated. It advised him to submit both a FAFSA & a scholarship app if interested.

Invited. 10char

Does anyone know if location effects your chances of receiving an invite to Scholarship Day? We’re up in Minnesota and it’s a bit of a hike… Hoping they just don’t want to invite people who probably won’t be able to go with scheduling, travel costs, hotel fees, etc.
Just wondering since it would be a shame not to attend on account of affordability :(

Are people confusing the “remember FAFSA is available, apply now!” supplement with the Scholarship Day letter? Has anyone gotten anything for Scholarship Day? I know the letter said we should expect them in late March-early April, but I think I saw some people got it already?

Meta- I’m fairly certain that we’ll be hearing about aid in March and April rather than scholarships. I am wondering if people are mentioning their invite to “Explore Carolina” or if they’ve officially been invited to Scholarship Day.
I wish these things were more finite, though. Pretty silly having so many people trying to guess what will be happening with scholarships and aid on a public forum.

Last year, my son received a Scholarship Day invitation. It conflicted with another school’s event. UNC gave him the option of attending a makeup day (which he did) or having some sort of online interview. I assume that they will be as flexible this year.

dittodog–Sometimes colleges that invite students to campus for competitions for their large scholarships pay the travel costs.

dittodog–IMHO UNC has a really confusing website. But then, I think most colleges have really confusing websites.

DS has been called (on phone) TWICE to congratulate him on his acceptance to UNC. But not one word about an invite to Scholarship Day.

They want him. They just don’t want to give him any money.

Which makes me think they don’t really want him.

We are getting so discouraged. Alabama’s full ride is looking better all the time. And we’re not the only UNC acceptees who feel this way. Alabama’s visionary president is “brain-draining” bright kids away from UNC-system schools. Seems a shame. Really does. You’d think more NC schools would realize that, just because a kid is bright, that doesn’t mean his/her parents are made of money. Especially in this rocky, crazy economy…money matters.

JeromeVergil–sincere congrats on the invite. You have earned it; you deserve it!

Now for the rant / vent ;-):

In-state DS’s stats are not too, too dissimilar from yours–yet no Scholarship Day invite. He’s a Latin whiz, too, like you. (Currently reading The Aeneid.) He also studies Greek (currently reading the Anabasis of Cyrus by Xenophon). However–home-schooled, so no APs. And crummy ECs. Heavy sigh.

You’d think they’d really want kids from underrepresented counties. (We’re in Stokes County, rural and relatively poor.) But apparently not. They want him enough to admit him. Just not enough to enable him to attend.

Just found out that we’re not even allowed to apply for a scholarship at UNC Asheville, because our home-school does not weight GPA (how could we, with no access to AP courses??), so DS doesn’t meet the 4.2 threshold. His 800 Latin SAT and 790 Math II SAT do not count, apparently. UNCA could not care less.

Discouraged beyond belief. Still glad that we home-schooled – our kids are receiving an education second to none – but man, state university bureaucracies sure seem to have a hard time dealing with anyone who wasn’t schooled in the conventional way.

LadyDi,
So many thoughts to express but your student sounds like a real catch! Congratulations on your feat of SUCCESSFULLY homeschooling! You should be commended! Salut!
Two congrats calls? Wow. I have seen others got an email. Seems post decision interaction has spotty protocol, with a few sporadic contacts. My son keeps getting things from the dorms…haven’t seen many other posts about that. It seems odd that they would send out invites to scholarship day EARLIER than promised, yet a handful reports receipt. We usually find some sort of announcement/Presser whenever Carolina makes any move& I haven’t seen anything except on this thread. Perhaps because they are giving out so few, they are staggering them? I honestly don’t expect to get one because although my son’s stats are good, I’m sure that he is not within the top 100. But I don’t think it’s over yet. I identify with your financial position of being just above the cutoff for need based help. Our income in 2010 was skewed so we won’t either, but since we lost a huge chunk of income by loss of my job, the Fafsa won’t reflect that, so I’m really bummed about it. But I would advise you to hang in there anyway. I think UNC admissions has been around long enough to know that not everyone accepted will actually end up there. Idon’t think it’s over yet. And a full ride to BAMA? ROLL TIDE! That’s excellent. My son got an awful lot of material from them but he wants to stay in state/close to home. I think my husband would have no ed to Alabama just to partake in the football hoopla!
