Did I make the right call? Safety vs. Safety

Hey again – I don't know if anyone remembers me from some months ago, but my situation has changed since, as has my perspective. Anyway, I was wondering if I could ask for advice on a choice I'm making.

I'm deciding between two of my safety schools. The first one is close to home, affordable, and fine education wise. The second is out of state and a bit more expensive, about the same standing as the first, but frankly, it's never been somewhere I was interested in. I barely changed my mind to apply in time for the deadline.

Right now, I've decided to go to the first school, because I figure that it will be a better way to find out what I really do what to major in, without spending a ton of money in the meantime and being okay with the school itself, compared to the second school. I think no matter which school I choose, I would consider transferring later to get a better quality education in the major I decide to pursue.

My only worry is that I'm considering becoming a film major and it definitely will not have the same opportunities as the second school, not to mention that because it's so near to home, I feel like it will restrict my growth a lot: I'm very reserved, and a bit too close to my family, to be general about it. At the second school I would have the opportunity to be near L.A and potentially learn a lot of great things about the business, as well as be on my own and have a chance to 'spread out'.

Do you think that I made the right decision here? If I'm going to transfer sometime anyway, this decision really isn't permanent – and I could always go to California, to a school that I was interested in, if I felt that film was the major for me. Is it reasonable to worry that I might miss out on a chance to have better opportunities, and is that enough reason to reconsider my choice? Should I wait and re-apply to colleges next year?

In all honesty, neither of these options are sitting right with me. A fresh perspective would be highly welcomed.

If you plan to transfer anyway, then full steam ahead with your current plan.

^ agreed

You can do two years at your close to home school and then transfer to a good school in LA and graduate as a film major. New Orleans is also becoming a hot spot for film and (if you don’t already live in Louisiana), I’d consider that option as well. Although its nothing like LA; it has it’s perks (cost of living in LA is ridiculously high).

For now, choose the cheaper place. Then you will have more money left to help pay if/when you do transfer.

OR

Take a gap year, make a better list for yourself, and apply for Fall 2013.
