Did I mess up my chances?

Hey,
My sophomore year went absolutely terrible. I screwed up majorly and will probably be looking at a 3.88/3.91 GPA by end of Junior year, and a probably a 3.91~3.93 by end of senior year. This is with 10 AP classes and rest honors.(Mostly getting 4s and 5s some 3s) Class rank will most probably be 10~15 out of 800. SAT is in the 2220~2270 range. 600 volunteer hours (one place, meaningful). 3 clubs, President of one, some regional/state awards linked with two of them. Good recs. Good essay. Is that all? I want to do something with Economics/ Business.
I really want to get into these schools: Cornell (AEM), UC Berkeley, Northwestern, UPenn., University of Chicago, Colombia, Rice, and then HYPSM but I don't even think I have a shot :P
Thanks if you comment or something.

You’re either pretty dumb or a ■■■■■ if you think a 3.9 messes up your chances.

I had a 3.0 and I will be a freshman this fall.

Oh ya I saw you on some thred, you had like a 2370 Sat right? Well what do colleges think if you get all your B’s during sophomore year, and get 4.0s for the rest?

As long as there’s an explanation for those Bs and as long as you make a conscientious effort for the rest of your time in high school (trying your best doesn’t necessarily mean you have to get 4.0s for the rest of your semesters - you just have to try), I don’t think colleges can hold a bad record earlier in your HS days against you. Cornell certainly seemed to be forgiving of my bad freshman/sophomore years, and unlike what you’re insinuating, I think my test scores only partially explain that.

honestly, if you write good, passionate essays that explain why you are a good fit the program you want, you can get in. I got in with a 3.75 28 ACT score, i even had a C on my transcript when I applied. Good luck

Thanks everyone for the posts. This gives me hope. Now that D has been accepted, son has fallen in love with Cornell and really wants to attend. It is a great fit for him but he is lower on the GPA and class rank scale. It will be a reach no doubt, but there is hope.

@Bruno You got in with a C? Right now I’m kinda worrying about getting rescinded because of a C…but i guess since people can get in with a C, i can STAY in with a C  what a relief!

@OP as in a 3.88 GPA, do you mean WEIGHTED or UNWEIGHTED? if it’s unweighted its pretty amazing. Your EC"s look pretty good. I had 2270 on my SAT also

Are you serious with this post…honestly, this type of stuff is really, really annoying. How can a 3.9 GPA possibly “mess up” your chances? I mean, really?

Your stats are excellent, your class rank is great. Many people would literally kill for those stats. Relax.

Haha yeah… don’t judge… but, i got a C in Japanese one. I got swine right when the scare started but she wouldn’t let me take the two tests that I missed. And no, they won’t rescind you for one C, just make sure the other classes are As and you’re good.

its not the gpa, its just its all sophomore year, will they look down on that? It mainly because I got all of the toughest teachers, the worst scheduling, I tried too many out of school programs. Do they mainly look at junior/senior year?
I am trying for a 2300 on the SAT, but I think I am probably going to get around a 2150~2300 range, is that good?

I had an F for Japanese. :D

(watashi wa no idiot desu - i bet even this is wrong somehow)

you’re indian right? me too :)

Yes, but what has that got to do with anything?

If I could point out an observation (try not to take too much offense), you embody the stereotypes many people hold about us Asians, with your unfounded paranoia and statements like “I don’t even think I have a shot,” all while asking us to comment on whether you have a shot.

I don’t want to sounds too harsh, because you’re really an intelligent person and all, but if anything is going to keep you out Cornell, it’s the fact that you’ve yet to understand and reconcile your abilities, potential, aspirations and the circumstances surrounding them all.
