I just saw my scores - 760 Reading, 660 Math, and 660 writing. Normally I would be happy with that, but it turns out that I only got a combined 4 on the essay! I can only assume that I went too far off topic, since I believe the essay was written fairly well otherwise.
My question is, how much do colleges look at the essay score? I'm not looking to get into an Ivy League school or anything. I just want to make sure that this horrid score is not going to affect my chance of getting into a decent college.

I believe colleges can overlook your score on the essay a little bit as long as you show in your app essays that your writing skills definitely improved from when you took the test.

Your essay isn’t really seen that much, it is worked in with your writing score as far as colleges care. With that in mind, be sure to do good on application essays and not make mistakes or get off topic like you did on the SAT essay. Good Luck, you have a fairly good score right there!
