I was just curious.
Mainly, because my friend was really considering applying to Virginia Tech, but immediately thought otherwise after the shooting. Was anyone else considering applying there, but now thinking otherwise because of the shooting?

Actually, it would probably have really beefed up security after that.

And honestly, shootings can happen anywhere. If you really like the school, then apply!

I personally wouldn't mind attending. My parents would not pay to attend a school with a scar reputation like that.

While many people probably decided not to apply because of it, it also probably made the school more well known, which may have added some additional applications, especially in the coming years as the incident gets farther away. The actual hard numbers should be interesting to look at.

I know that for Tulane hurricane Katrina, while it decreased applications the following year, the year after that increased applications, especially from farther away regions, due to better name recognition.

Last spring was my s's prime time for identifying schools that he wanted to apply to. After the tragedy at VT, I was wondering how it would affect his keeping Tech on his list. He watched the media coverage in April with his dad and I and was so worried about many kids we knew who are students there. Throughout it all, we kept seeing kids interviewed that seemed to be such decent, quality people who were so proud of their school and faced that tragedy with such poise and courage.

Not only did he decide to apply, he decided to go ED, which at Tech is binding. He went up to visit the first day of classes this past August and was sold by the sense of community and school spirit. It really is a special place, anorexic_abe. You may want to look here at a link for stats of applicants for this fall.

Freshman Snapshot | Undergraduate Admissions | Virginia Tech

20,756 kids applied......this is an increase. And we just found out that more students accepted that they thought so now they are scrambling to find freshman housing....some who waited till the deadline to turn in their housing contracts will start out in temporary housing. Good luck with your search.

The though with Virginia Tech is it is not the first time something like that happened. two or three shooting incidences occurred before that. So I think if people know the history it may deter people from applying

A notable basketball prospect requested a release of his commitment to VATech after the shootings.
But I understand both Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois have seen applications increase.
