Wish my parents would pay for college let alone a new car.

My kid drives a '94 Olds with over 100k miles. He bought the car for $300 from his grandpa. It has a lot of life left in it. He is so frugal, he wouldnt consider spending much money on a depreciating asset, like a car. We live in Florida and his a/c doesnt work. He wont let me spend the money to get it fixed. Thats frugal!

Midmo, dbwes, and others:
I’m not picking up on a lot of disdain for those who do buy cars for their kids. Maybe I’m tone deaf? What I am hearing is response to the *$$ = intelligence *hypothesis and the spending = $$ corollary.

^^^Just one or two posts have been explicit, mafool. Not a big deal.

I’m glad some parents bought their kids cars for college. If it weren’t for these kids, my son wouldn’t have transportation.

Toledo — LOL!!!

A new car for a teenager is a luxury, but for some families, it’s something they can afford, and they may have good reasons to do it. My parents bought me a new 1978 Honda Accord when I was in college, and I very much appreciated it. I drove that car for a long time (even though it had no AC). We bought a third car (used, but not that old) for my son to drive when he was a senior in high school–but he won’t have it at college this year, and he’ll have to make a good case to have it there next year.

Not us, putting four of them through in 11 consecutive years! They seem to manage OK.

S1 got a laptop for hs graduation and had full use of a 10-yr-old Toyota. S2 got 3 new musical instruments (necessary) as well as the graduation laptop. He didn’t have a car at all until this year (sophomore) when he got use of the 2002 Toyota.

No way I’d ever buy my kids a brand new car unless I won the lottery.

The deal in our house was if you got a full ride you got a car. Not owning a car until I was 26 or 27 it was fun rewarding a kid who now drives the best car in the family.
