I'm just curious. :) I really want to make the best out of my upcoming summer, but I'm not sure where to start.

I want to spend my time doing something worthwhile, beneficial, and relatively cheap, so I'm thinking of taking up some community college courses for fun. But at the same time, I sort of want to join a program for the heck of it so I can branch out and get a feel for different fields of studies or work or what have you.

How did you guys spend your first high school summer and how did you find these opportunities? Thanks! [:

I did Duke TiP, but since I had already been doing it (that was my third year in the program) it wasn’t exactly new.

D has been accepted to Brown and Columbia’s summer programs, but is waiting for a scholarship. If that comes through, she’ll do Brown. Columbia is out due to cost. Either way, she’ll only do a 2-3 week session, sports and summer fun will take the rest of her time.

Don’t do any summer programs (unless you REALLY want to). Instead, try to get a lot of experience through a summer job or volunteers opportunities. I was able to volunteer at a bunch of places that summer, and those experiences will be useful down the line when applying to summer programs/internships. Just make sure you don’t only sit on your ass/go to vacation–in addition to being lazy, work or volunteer.
