I've noticed that a lot of people took AP classes freshman year. I don't know about other schools, but mine wouldn't let me take AP classes so I just doubled up with honors science classes and took various online classes to keep myself challenged. Does this look bad on applications even if I end up having 15 APs total? Has anyone else not taken APs freshman year but did later? Please let me know your thoughts.

Colleges judge you based on taking the hardest courses available at your school.

I think the HYPSM admits from my school took a maximum of 1 AP their freshman year and 8-10 overall. There were some kids who did take around the number of AP’s that you’re planning on, but the fact that most of them are going to be attending satellite campuses of state schools says a lot about how well that worked out for them.

Colleges would really rather see that you can balance school with other things as well. Besides, you’ll have plenty of time to delve into AP courses the rest of your high school career, so just take it slow.

Best of luck!

It’s all relative to your school. My school doesn’t offer APs freshman year, but kids still ended up at top schools.

What do you mean “a lot”? I can guarantee you that most kids do not take AP class in freshmen year. Some schools would even limit AP classes to Junior and sometimes senior.
