anyone else get an apartment in college 8?

no way! i wanted to live in an apartment and at the time i wanted to be in either crown or college 8 (now in crown and in a residence hall) and called college 8 about that and said that freshmen generally dont get assigned to an apartment. lucky you!

Are you sure it’s not an apartment and not a quad room? How strange.

well if u had a quad room, wouldnt they say u have a quad room rather than apartment? plus they said that generally they didnt have freshmen possibly cuz the upperclassmen have priority consideration over the apartments than freshmen, and that they may have had space left, and now u got it!

Exactly. Single rooms and apartments are not typically available to freshman (I believe this is or is close to the precise language they use). However, if space is available, freshman can be assigned to these.

I think some upperclassmen students chose to dorm this year due to the rate saver option (continuing students are able to pay the 2009-2010 rates instead of the 2010-2011 rates if they are housed in a dorm) so that has probably opened up some apartment spaces that normally would have been taken. I took this option myself since it’s saving me $900 staying in a dorm single instead of an apartment single ;)

this is what the email said:

“This message is to let you know that we have received your housing application and have started assigning students to rooms. At this time, you have been assigned to live in a apartment double room in Residential Hall A Quad, L Building.”

Oh, yeah, see where it says “Residential Hall”? That’s a dorm building. You’re being housed in dorm double. I know the “apartment” part of it is confusing, they did it at Porter too for a couple of the rooms for some reason. I did not pay much attention to what the reason was, however. But I am nearly 100% sure you are not in an apartment, but a dorm.

From College 8’s housing guide:

[Housing Guide](http://eight.ucsc.edu/housing-guide.html)

Well i went to orientation, and apparently each building (at least the L buildings) have apartments, so they are actually in the same buildings as the dorms.

How odd. Some were labeled like that at Porter when I was choosing my room for next year, but I guarantee you they are not apartments within the dorm buildings. Seemed more like a typo than anything.

Still interesting, though.

I had a dorm apartment at Porter several years ago. Basically, it’s a studio apartment inside the dorm. They existed for upperclassmen before the actual apartments were built. Now they’re open to everyone.
