Japanese 1: Elementary Japanese
Japanese 1A: Elementary Japanese for Heritage-speakers

What is the difference between the two types of languages classes (besides the obvious fact that students will be more familiar with the language in the 1A class)? Do the classes use the same books, but the heritage-speaker classes go at a faster pace? Do the heritage-speaker classes teach much more difficult content?

And do I need to take a placement test to enroll in a language class for heritage-speakers? All it says is that I must have no prior formal instruction in the language (which is true for me).

Heritage speakers may have different problems studying the language. Non-heritage language learners are basically learning from scratch and probably in relation to Englishl Heritage speakers may be fluent speakers (more or less) but may be illiterate in the written language–or some degree there of. It will be more intensive because there are a lot of things, particularly in the spoken language, that don’t need to be covered. However, the problems in reading/writing can be quite different than those of the non-heritage learner.
