Anyone care to elaborate? I hear the terms being thrown around all the time.

Athletically?

Recruits get scholarships.

Walk-ons dont.

Yeah but in Ivies how does it work? If you're really rich and really good, you wouldnt get a scholarship, but you would get recruited. (I'm definitely not really rich lol so I'm not talking about myself)

Athletically? Yes you would. Athletic scholarships have nothing to do with academics(other than a 2.0 must be obtained in HS) or a family's economic situation.

Really? I've had so many tell me scholarships are impossible for ivies if you don't need them. Then again, all those people were athletically challenged :D.

I don't think there are athletic scholarships in Ivy Leagues or DIIIs.

Recruits talk to the coach ahead of time. They don't have to get money - esp. if they're not that competitive. But they get in with the understanding that they'll be playing for the school.

Walk-ons just show up on the first day.

And there are no scholarships - athletic or merit - in the ivy league.

Hokegoalie...wow you really screwed me over you farghin' hockey/soccer player lol

It's all need based in the Ivies.

There are also some "invited" walk-ons, as opposed to those walk-on on their own. They don't get scholarship money but there is a pretty strong chance that they'll get it after a year or so.
Coaches will sometimes do this when they want a kid but scholarship money is tight.

Mr. Pink is right.

Recruited athletes have been 'recruited' by the university, and many times have had an "official" visit (paid for by the university) or an "unofficial" visit. These recruits are guaranteed a roster spot and depending on the university, an athletic scholarship.

Walk-ons attend the university without an athletic scholarship, and they have no assurance that they will make the team. Sometimes they have no previous contact with the coaching staff. (However, if they make the team, many times they will receive a scholarship for the next year(s).)

Walk ons can get scholarships after their first year. Preferred walk on is another one. The way I understand it is that the coaches like you & want you but right now there's not enough schloarships to give you one for fresh. year, but you might get one soph. year.
