According to McGill’s website, they offer Computer Science for Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Science. I was wondering what’s the difference between the one in Arts and the one in Science. Reading the descriptions for each one, I assume the computer science major for Arts doesn’t go as in-depth as the one for Science.
Also, they said that majoring in Computer Science in Faculty of Arts minoring in a supplementary computer science course will be the equivalent of majoring in computer science in the Faculty of science. Can anyone warrant that statement?
In Science, the Comp. Sci major is a 54 credit program and quite extensive. In Arts, the major is only 36 credits however you have the option of doing a “Supplementary Minor in Comp Sci” of 18 credits which brings you on par with the Science program.
At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter which faculty you register in because you can do pretty much the same program in both. I’d recommend Science as it will give you access to the Science Internship Office and you can avoid Arts Humanities/Social Science freshman requirements.
However if you are an international student, an Arts degree may be significantly cheaper (almost half price last I checked).
Yeah, as an international student myself, I have two choices: go for a cheaper degree and learn social science stuff (which I’m not interested in) or go for a more expensive degree and learn stuff that I’m interested in (along with doing the Science Internship Office). I’m just gonna hope they give me scholarships so I can do the Science degree program (they probably won’t)
You only have to do the Humanities/Social Science requirements in your freshman year. After that you can do any program any approved electives that you want.
