Differences between Freshmen and Transfer Students

@sanda & ciao - Same heeere. 4.34, IB candidate, 2250+ SATs, and excellent ECs… Best school I got into was SC. Needless to say, everyone was surprised. I was so disappointed. :\ CC was a huge low-blow (humbling experience, hah) for me, but I grew to love it! :)

edelynly–i can totally identify. i was the only one out of all my closest friends to go to a cc. to be quite honest, we used make fun of community college kids because we generalized them as screw ups…then i became one of them. i hated my firsts semesters and felt out of place…but now i know better. no one is too good for an education, even its from a cc :).

I started going to a CC in 1996 while working full-time. Took a break in 2000 when I had my baby; went back in 2005. I’ve been going to school like forever (part-time) while juggling with a full-time job and a family. Finally, I’m almost done with all the pre-reqs & breadth requirements (need to repeat Engl 1A & Calc I this semester since they were taken more than 5 yrs ago). I can’t wait to hear about my application and just go to school full-time and be done with it.

@Oliver, I honestly didnt mention intelligence because i would think that the freshmen are definitely more intelligent. Transfers are cooler though hah. Oh and i’m suddenly shallow? go screw yourself olive

@Empathy, beautiful post, thank you for that hah

@sandaboy, if i had a 4.0 in high school there is nooooo way i would have gone to a jc. I went to a jc because i had like a 2.6 in high school hah

@ciaokarol, that is so sad and funny that you made fun of cc’ers and then ended up being one hah. I knew i was going to a jc about a month into sophomore year when i realized i had blown the entire semester and any shot at getting good grades

riiight? ohh the irony. well i never made fun of them to their faces or belittled anyone (not that kind of person). just that whenever my friends and i who all happened to be AP kids talked about the future, we made fun of community colleges and the “cool kids” who would end up there. blah. i have finally gotten my golden ticket–UCLA acceptance! ;)

I was one of those people who look down on community colleges. Gpa 4.0, honors classes,ap classes.got some scholarship at some normal schools.but then I then for financial reasons, I have to go to a jc.big wake up call for me. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
@Dallas like u have seen with other posters, intelligence is not the obvious difference btw freshmen and transfers.people go to jc for various reasons:)

@ Dallas1

I didn’t go to a jc…I’m at UCI! lol

@sandaboy, whoops my bad hah

@ Dallas1

hahah it’s all good dude…:)…too many people to keep a track of on these forums anyways ;)

@nycdream1, i completely agree with you. I think the two stats that would vary the most would be intelligence and financial situation. Jc students not being as smart and not being as wealthy. Again this is on AVERAGE though because i certainly dont consider myself any less intelligent than a freshmen admit hah

IMHO, all of you CCC transfer students are smarter than those that get straight into UCB/any other UC for that matter…WHY?!:

you save a shi*ton of money

you get to live where you want (CCCs are all over the state)

Wayyyy easier to transfer than a direct ticket in (TAG to a decent UC/TAP for UCLA)

you get the same degree at the end when you transfer that says “UCB/whatever UC you go to, Graduate”

you get to have more fun in high school and not stress about your GPA as much…honestly you could get below a 3 and be fine.

you transfer with essentially a clean slate (i.e. a virtual 4.0, meaning your GPA is a 4 and it goes down from there…just your units transfer from ccc)

not committed to one campus for too long (i.e. get bored at one place)

The only thing I think you guys missed out on is dorm life…but seriously I think the above positives outweigh this one negative…which can even be canceled out if you dorm as a junior ;)

Interestingly, these comments are coming from me…someone who went straight to UCI was trying to transfer to UCLA
