I've heard collectively that Midwest schools are more laid back and less preppy/pretentious than their Northeastern counterparts. What exactly is preppy? Are there any more differences besides selectivity?

Preppy meaning the kind of kids who go to prep schools. Rich, stuck up, and self-righteous. At least, that’s the negative connotation. Whether it’s true or not is for you to figure out.

Anyway, the difference is basically that people who can imagine themselves in the Midwest, with all the stereotypes of it, tend to go to schools in the Midwest. Same for schools in the Northeast. Truth is, there are going to be plenty of diverse people at any school, but you’ll find the overall attitude is a bit different depending not just on geographical area but also upon the individual school.

preppy has a positive connotation?

^Sometimes preppy=smart

So, they may not be down-to-earth? I would consider my friends and I to be down-to-earth, middle class. I attend a public school.
