Dilemma and Thoughts

I really thank you all for answering this question and taking your time. I really appreciate it. If you have any last tips it would be really helpful for me. Otherwise, thanks! From the bottom of my heart.

Do you mean these services do this work on your behalf?

yes they personalize my app and essay just for me and will ask students from HYP to polish it and provide suggestions.

Thatā€™s probably verging on unethical, but I know that isnā€™t what you asked about. Iā€™m guessing itā€™s what others at your high school do.

Good luck to you. You need realistic schools, bottom line.

Got it, thanks man. Forever in debt

I mean its school provided and you can find some better personalized one which is banned from all UC schools and many more. For me I 'd just stick with school consoling. We have one on one meetings with experts and give up advice and updates on stuff. Youā€™re right, it is very unethical.

For a high school student, your focus is unusually narrow from an American perspective. This is causing you psychological stress now and is likely to continue at any Top 20 American university or college as all have course distribution requirements. You may want to consider attending university in a country where course distribution requirements are less than those found at American schools.

Yes, self-studying for an AP exam is recommended since your school does not offer an AP course in that subject.

I suggest that you speak with others in your community who have attended or are attending university in a Western country so that you can better understand the educational atmosphere in the US, UK, Switzerland, Canada, or other Western countries. Much of your fear may be from a lack of understanding of Western expectations & requirements. Should help to be exposed to the experiences of other Chinese students studying abroad.

The thing is Iā€™m not sure where anything is headed towards; I donā€™t have lots of goals and achievements and stuff and thatā€™s causing me some fear. My EC section (Refer to up there) is pretty well but Iā€™m reallly not sure about what the t20 colleges want. Theres no guide for me anyhow about what majors need what APā€™s, AP amounts that give you substancial chances to

enter the t20, or education on major major career, and salary stuff. Neither do I know whether schools would accept self-study. Thatā€™s why Iā€™m lost and kind of panicking right now: to address the lack of guidance I have.

You can submit any AP scores whether resulting from self-study or from a course offered at your current school.

The University of Virginia offers an outstanding data sciences program:

Could I get in with 8-9 ap courses with additional 2-3 exams with either 4-5? Iā€™m also not sure which APā€™s except for comp physics, chem, calc ab bc, are there more? Would you recommend some extra ECā€™s (adding on to oneā€™s above)? Would UCB even have chancing with my app?

also, a deep thanks!

If your desire is to study Data Science, it would be wiseā€“not required, howeverā€“to take AP Statistics as well as any AP math courses that are available at your school.

I cannot assess the chances of any high school sophomore for most selective colleges and universities.

Please read the information provided on the University of Virginia website for Data Science majors which I posted above.

Yes, typically colleges & universities want to see a score of 4 or 5 on an AP exam in order to get credit for that course at the college level. AP courses and exam scores are not required by US colleges & universities to the best of my knowledge. Nevertheless, if you claim to have a strong interest in studying Data Science, then you should take statistics and calculus and other courses in math.

Yes thank you! Got it. I would also ask whether a 1530 on SAT and a gpa of 3.9 would show enough rigor towards UVA?

Yes, a 1530 SAT is a great score, but the math score should be higher than the English score for one focusing on data science as a major. (Math, Statistics, and Computer/Information Systems are great for Data Science as best as I understand this major.)

Check the website for University of Virginia.

Regardless of oneā€™s qualifications, it does not mean that an applicant will be admitted. US colleges & universities read the entire application before rendering a decision.

Iā€™m seeing that the common data set says approximately 99% of students are reaching 4.0 or above in their gpa, doesnā€™t that make me too under qualification? Also, my senior APā€™s do count and add on to my app right? Adding on senior Iā€™d have like 8-9 ap courses?

Is the 4.0 GPA weighted or unweighted ?

Senior year, first semester courses should count.

Iā€™m not really sure, but it does just say 4.32 and common stats also says 4.

What is your weighted GPA ?

What is your class rank ?

Many high schools in the US suffer from grade inflation, therefore, as an international applicant, be sure to point out your class rank.

Admission to the University of Virginia is very competitive. I suspect that international applicants must have outstanding credentials. Any applicant can be denied admission regardless of qualifications.

I cannot answer anymore questions as I have directed you to the Data Science programs at U Virginia and to UVaā€™s website for that major.

got it, deep thanks
