I've started the UC application process and there's a section on scholarships. You check all that apply to you and i was looking through them and found a few for gay and lesbian students. I am gay but i'm not out to my parents. My parents arent looking through my apps or anything but it still worries me. Chances i even get them are very slim. My college counselor my see that i've checked them and im from a catholic school so i might be told something who knows.... To check the box or not to check the box? This question may not even be worth your time but if you could spare your time it would be appreciated.

i think that you should check it... are you ready to tell your parents... i mean, you were born that way and thats perfectly fine and normal.

I'm fine with my sexuality but try telling that to devout traditional mexican catholics.. thats religous and cultural issues lol.

If you do not want to be out I would not check the box. If you do check it and you are awarded some scholarship, they will find out. I understand what you are saying about the religious and cultural issues, also understand what Antarius is saying. Really it is up to you but I wouldn't check the box assuming that they will never find out.

Let me ask three questions:

IF you don't check the box, so that your parents or school don't find out about your orientation, would you be willing to go elsewhere IF costs were a factor?

IF you check the box, and somehow your peers find out, will that next six months matter MORE than perhaps earning money for college which is 4-years of your life.

With respect to your orientation, you'll have to tell your parents sometime and excise the Catholic guilt, will it be "better" for you to do it now, before you go of to school where you'll likely be able to explore being gay more fully, or are you willing to limit such exploration to please your parents until after you graduate from college?

After you answer those questions...I think you'll have made up your mind no matter what it is.

Hope it helps. And, good luck.

i say, Isleboy has a very valid set of Questions and points

Just tick the box... i mean think about it - this scolarship is worth thousands of dollars i guess.....thats a lot of money.

Think of a way to tell your parents (you eventually have to do that)... but if you don't feel upto telling them now.....then i dunno....
Maybe you can lie and say you only checked the box so that you can get the scolarship even though you're not really gay.....lol
