Dining Options at Bama

most kids would rather sleep than get up earlier to make time for breakfast.

Exactly…to allow time to eat a full breakfast worth of a meal plan in a dining hall requires at least 30 minutes…most kids would rather sleep in…or go between classes.

*
all you freshman parents - don’t worry - your kids will not starve! most likely they will have unused meals left over. *

I can’t stress this enough. Too many parents opt for the pricier meal plan thinking that their child will be swiping their cards a few times per day.

In reality, once the kids discover all the off-campus hangouts, they rarely eat more than one meal plan per day…and rarely ever eat a meal plan meal on campus during the weekend.

If Bama were some rural LAC with little off-campus choices, it would be a different story…but with so many other options, kids quickly tire of meal plans.

That said, my older son did eat dinner or lunch at Burke at least 3 times per week for all 4 years because of his tutoring job at Osband Hall…which is very close to Burke.

So how is the upcharge at Bryant paid, action card? Dining dollars? If dining dollars can you reload it?

So, I’m gonna be contrarian here  D never ate breakfast at home (still doesn’t) and to say she wasn’t a “morning person” is an understatement. However, the group of friends she made last year liked to get together for breakfast most school day mornings. She opted not to take any classes earlier than 9 this year so the gang can get breakfast together on a regular basis.

If you had told me that last year I would have laughed at you…

Son paid the upcharge in cash at Bryant but he doesn’t know if you could use the ACT for the difference.

First semester, S ran out of meals from the Silver Plan and we had to get him 20 more meals at the end of the sem. Second semester, he had leftover meals, especially since the kids were sent home early bec. of the tornado. The extra Dining Dollars rolled over into Bama Cash, so now he has an inordinate amount of “change” for his laundry  and possibly Publix, for the fresh vegetables he would like to try his hand at cooking this semester.

Son is also not a morning person but he can get up when he has to; in fact, he has an 8am class in the fall. However, he will sacrifice the ungodly hour for a great professor. He has cereal in his dorm for breakfast but I suspect he would rather sleep the extra minutes than eat.

*So how is the upcharge at Bryant paid, action card? Dining dollars? If dining dollars can you reload it? *

Not sure if you can use DD…I’m guessing that you can use DD and Action Card Bama Cash.

You cannot reload DD…all you can do is add more to Action Card Bama Cash…but really no big deal…no reason to reload DD as long as you can add to Action Card. It’s ALWAYS better to have money on Action Card instead of DD. DD can be used at less places…so money is better on Act Card.

The extra Dining Dollars rolled over into Bama Cash, so now he has an inordinate amount of “change” for his laundry and possibly Publix, for the fresh vegetables he would like to try his hand at cooking this semester.

Bama Cash on the Act Card can be used at many more places than DD. Bama Cash can also be used at some drug stores, gas stations, and restaurants.

i would rather get the silver plan and run out of meals than get a larger meal plan and have them go unused.

my DD almost always eats lunch on campus, but she has lots of other things going on at dinner time.

and there are many places she can eat dinner for the 8.50 or so a dinner meal “costs”.

i am excited that she wont have to be a slave to her meal plan this year!

*i would rather get the silver plan and run out of meals than get a larger meal plan and have them go unused.
*

I agree.

If you think your child might run out with Silver, then have them buy their breakfasts (cheaper than the lunch/dinner meal plan rate) to save their numbers for lunches and dinners.

Also, when you look at the difference between Silver and Gold, the amount is large enough that if you had to buy a Thrifty Twenty plan to add to Silver, you’re still coming out way ahead.

Bryant Sports Grill is my favorite dining hall and is the favorite of many of the university’s labor and maintenance employees, probably because it offers two meat choices and better pizza. It is also close to the Honors College, so I could go there on my 30-minute lunch breaks. As an interesting fact, most people will refer to the manager of Bryant as “Mama.”

Dinner at Bryant costs 19.75 (a 9.75 upcharge), but I had some service recovery certificates good for any dining hall, so I used them for dinner at Bryant. Considering that there were only 15 people eating dinner compared to hundreds at Lakeside, it was a nice, quiet dinner. Bryant is also the only dining hall that provides trays and generally has larger portion sizes.

I’m not buying a meal plan right away as Bama Dining was doing some interesting promotions to get students to purchase meal plans later in the year (ie refer a friend and you each get 5 free meals; which could make for a very lucrative conga) and I want to git rid of the freshman 15.

We have eaten at Bryant for lunch a few times. Yes, it is conveniently located close enough to the Honors College to head over there for lunch.

We’ve never eaten there for dinner…don’t want that upcharge…lol…those pricey steaks are to keep those beefy athletes “beefy.”
