So my daughter is a picky eater... Not big breakfast, maybe fruit, muffin & coffee and not a big snacker. She doesn't drink soft drinks, prefers water. Would she be bette off with the silver plan than the gold? How fast do these funds run out. She does like a smoothy now and than, or frozen yogurt. Can she start off with smaller plan and add on if she runs out? Any thoughts from experienced females??

ucmomhopeful - I heard it’s best to get a minimum meal plan because you always add funds to your Husky Card to use for dining if you run low. If you get a higher end meal plan and you don’t use all the funds before the end of spring quarter…you lose that money. Here’s something from the UW Housing and Dining web site:

Dining Facts

If you are not spending as much on campus as you originally anticipated, you can make a Dining Level change and select a lower Dining Level for the next quarter.

If you have an unused balance on your Resident Dining Account at the end of autumn quarter, those funds will be carried over to winter quarter. Any unused balance at the end of winter quarter will carry over to spring quarter.

At the end of spring quarter or when you vacate, the unused balance on your Resident Dining Account is nonrefundable and nontransferable.

If you think you may run out of funds earlier than anticipated, you can add money to your Husky Card Account, which can be used anywhere the Resident Dining Account is accepted and at many off-campus locations.

Your Resident Dining Account funds cannot be transferred to your Husky Card Account.

Your Resident Dining Account funds cannot be used at off-campus restaurants.

You can add money to your Husky Card Account at any time. The money in your Husky Card Account does not expire and is refundable at any time upon request.

My brother told me that most kids he knows with higher level food plans almost always end up giving free food to their friends to try and use up all the funds, FWIW.

food here is terrble, get the lowest plan possible (bronze) then give your daughter money to buy real food on the ave, which is cheaper and far superior

i would advise getting the bronze and adding on money to your card later if you need it. i had gold last qrtr and had over $200 left that rolled over to this qrtr. dorm food gets old really fast and there’s plenty of places to eat off campus for the same amount of money and much better quality and diversity.
