Directed/Independent Study

What is the basic rule with these? Are they better than a regular class to adcomms? How many is too many in a single year? What if your school doesn't offer AP or "difficult" classes? Can you take say, two or three Directed Studies, but still appear motivated, or do adcomms think these are padding your schedule? My school doesn't have Physics or World History because the principal said there was too small of enrollment for them; therefore I have them for Directed Studies. I'm also faced with a pathetic Env. Geo. class that insults my intelligence: it's taught so that the bottom of the barrel students can understand it; that leads to complete lack of interest and motivation from me, as well as disruptive class time from students who are just there for the attendance. What is the rule of thumb to go by when you've used up every difficult class your school offers, and all that is left between you and a gym class is a Directed Study?

Has anybody ever gotten in at Cornell with two or three Independent Studies?

I'm so sorry that your personified intelligence has been insulted by those pathetic underlings and idiot teachers...

are you near a local university or community college? if so, take some classes there. if not, then do the directed studies but you should give yourself a strict curriculum and deadlines to follow. im not sure exactly how you would go about doing it but if you are motivated enough then i'm sure youll figure out a way.

i wouldn't worry what adcomms think. you can alwyas explain your situation to them.

"Spanks: I'm so sorry that your personified intelligence has been insulted by those pathetic underlings and idiot teachers..."

I'm sorry that you don't understand what my high school is like. The teachers are fine, most are excellent in their subjects. I have a problem with the students. My Env. Geo. class had a kid turning on the faucet so it sprays at high-power and kept playing with the water like it was a new discovery; he stuck his hand under the water, giggling like crazy, and sprayed me and my whole table of people. Then he laughed because the water was so neat to him.

We're required to do vocab, including words like HYPOTHESIS, COMMONS, CONCLUSION, DEDUCTIVE REASONING, etc. How silly is that when we're seniors! And they call it an advanced class.

Yesterday, we had a sub who asked us to get into our assigned lab groups, which we were never officially assigned any; suddenly this whole table joined with two others because they were all friends, which made seven people at their station. The sub said the groups should only be four, and the whole group exploded with "WE ARE A GROUP AND YOU CAN'T MAKE US BREAK UP; YOU'RE NOT OUR TEACHER! WE ALWAYS WORK TOGETHER!" Keep in mind these are seniors too.

Also, we were reading a packet once which had a slight remark by the writer about God not creating man. There are some major baptists in the class, and the big mouth of all of them erupted with "I'M NOT READING THIS AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME (this was directed to our actual teacher)! THIS WRITER IS A POMPOUS JERK WHO THINKS HE KNOWS EVERYTHING WHEN GOD IS THE ONE WHO CREATED HUMANS; WE NEVER EVOLVED OUT OF SMALL CELLS! HE'S WRONG! YOU KNOW, GOOD TEACHERS DON'T TRY TO FORCE THEIR BELIEFS UPON STUDENTS, AND RIGHT NOW, YOU AREN'T EXACTLY A GREAT TEACHER SINCE YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE US BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN!" This was seriously what this girl said to our teacher, who is a good teacher and didn't deserve this loud mouth (who I happen to sort of be friends with), yelling at her and insulting her in class.

oh wow, that's unfortunate, lol.

Isn't it terrible? I feel so culture shocked or something in my school. There are only about two or three of us in our class that really want difficult classes and are the quieter type. Being in our school, with girls like the one from above I described, and that one being our "friend" of sorts, it's really crazy. Just because our english teacher last year didn't give them a third day to finish work (I came and got a book during an easy hour and finished), she jumped up and yelled at him and used swear names; at the end of the year, he asked her to space herself from some people when we took a test and she flipped up because she wouldn't be able to talk to her friends, again calling him names; there were also boys that same day, and this is gross, talking about girls, holes, and other "things" involving girls and holes. I nearly screamed bloody murder because I feel like I go every day to a prison or something because everyone treats each other like hell, and you can't learn a darn thing unless you are in the math classes, which are the only ones separated by ability.

i know how you feel! i am taking course(s) at a *college (though they don't like to admit it~) i actually withdrew and took distant ed. for high school. i am happy, but you really have to be motivated. i started cooking at home.
