Class Selection - Overwhelming

Okay, I'm planning on being a double Govt/History major in CAS, and I've taken a look at classes for fall 2009.

I already have been advised to take intro courses for Gov't/History, because grad schools want you to see the intro courses for your major. On top of that, I have to fulfill a language requirement...for a class that is THREE DAYS A WEEK Mon/Wed/Fri? And then a phys ed requirement..and i have to get a science out of the way, which is also three days. oh yeah, and the writing seminars, which are dateless so i have no idea if the schedule im planning will even work.

Is having 5 hours of class a day (and 3-4 diff classes a day) normal at cornell? bc that's what it's going to come down to for me...even with 14 credits

there should be a writing seminar you can fit into your schedule even if it is an 8am one…

not sure about this but do writing in the majors count as FWS?

why are you trying to do everything your first semester freshmen year?

You don’t have to complete your language requirement and your science requirement for 4 YEARS

Take it easy. It is usually normal for about 3 hours of class time every day (+ extra lab time) but I dunno about doing 5 hours a day your first semester.

its perfectly normal. my schedule with 13 cr goes from 10-4 30 class time only, on fridays with no break. 10-430 on wed with 1 hour break and 10-430 on monday with 2 hour break. and i have 2 hours of class on tuesday and 3 on thursday but i work both days for 4 hours right after class. and in addition to that i have 4 cr of autotutorial physics which doesn’t even show on my schedule cause its self study and takes the longest time out of my classes. so yea its normal.

just have class time isn’t that bad if the classes aren’t really challening, then you wont have to spend much time on homework/study.

anbuItachi, that makes me feel better. I just heard all these rumors that college students have so much free time because they have like 2 hours of class a day and are off fridays. guess that means every college except the the top 20 lol.

btw I’m not trying to do everything first semester, i’ve planned out like two semesters already lol, bc I want to get the language out of the way (plus I want to study abroad so it will prob look good) and I HATE science so i just want that out of the way.

Also, how many 200 level classes should one be taking freshman year, specifically first semester?

LOL are you kidding? I’m not even at Cornell yet (transfer) and I had to take 17 credits this year. Most days my classes don’t get out until 6 PM… I’m sort of counting on Cornell actually being a little easier than what I am doing now.

If you’re a double major you should have a relatively significant course load though.

hoonose - thank you, that really put it into perspective haha. thats exactly the program ive been using, and its really helpful. Does anyone ever take 24 credits though? I think its over 20 that it has to be approved or something

Haha man you and me have the opposite problem, there are too many classes I want to take and I don’t know how to fit them all in -_-x

I think the limit for engineers in online course-selection is 23 credits. Not sure about other colleges, but in engineering all you need to do is get the add/drop form from the registrar and have a faculty to sign it. And for anyone aspiring to do 20+ credits, it is possible. Just make sure to balance the number of difficult and easy classes. For the schedule shown, CS 2800, ECE 2100 and MATH 2930 are generally agreed to be easy. The easiness of ECE 2300 and PHYS 2213 depends who you talk to (most ECE majors would say its not that difficult).
