I'm thinking about being a music major and would love to conduct. My question though is, what are the options out there for a conducter besides in schools? I really don't think I'd be gifted enough to conduct in the more pestigious areas, but even if I am, I'd need to get my start somewhere right? Is there any where else to get a start in conducting besides in a elementary, middle or high school?

Based on my observations and experience, in addition to schools, there are conducting jobs with local community choruses or in churches (although those are often part of the church organist job). Locally, we also have a woman who has developed a pretty significant Children's Choir, with three levels (2-4th grade, 5-8th grade and high school girls) that practice once a week and do two concerts a year. She is now expanding to a community about 30 minutes away. This is within the umbrella of a not-for-profit organization.

Regarding schooling, I have so far only seen a Bachelor's level program at the Mannes School in NYC. Generally, you can concentrate in conducting only at the Master's level and above.

Oh ok. Thanks for the heads up.

I just stumbled across a BM in conducting at Chapman University's conservatory in Southern California: Chapman University - Music - Programs - Conducting

It is a rarity.
