We just watched the original again. Very topical, especially with the abortion issue. The movie still gets to me after all these years- the chemistry between the main characters, the music, dancing, iconic lines by Jerry Orbach and Patrick Swayze.
There was a sequel a few years ago that I thought was terrible - zero chemistry.
There are hints about a new sequel coming out . My prediction -Johnny is gone (Patrick Swayze is irreplaceable in that role) but Baby and Johnny had a child!
My prediction was not really about Johnny being alive, because I know what has been said already about that. My prediction relates to a possible child ! I’m sure I’m not correct and certainly no screenwriter!
I’d been thinking a lot about Dirty Dancing recently, even before the Roe decision was revisited. I watched it on an airplane ride and it was delightful. It’s certainly a movie that has held up well.
Because Baby was going to attend Mt Holyoke, Dirty Dancing has become the unofficial movie of MHC. When D was there, it was shown during the opening of school just about every year.
We were in 7th grade and I recall I had I friend who saw it 7 times - and that was when you still had to take yourself to the cinema and buy the ticket.
I also recall that the abortion plot very much went over our heads, though. The music still transports me to my youth…
It was made on the cheap. Many doing double duty. The assistant choreographer plays the role of the wealthy woman who takes “ lessons” from “Johnny”. By the way, the actor Lonny Price who plays the loathsome nephew of the resort owner is the director/narrator of a terrific documentary on the disaster that was the Broadway show Merrily we Roll Along in which he had a lead role: The Best Worst Thing that Ever Could Have Happened. Highly recommend.
I knew Dirty Dancing was made on the cheap, but didn’t realize it was that cheap. i hope Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze at least got a percentage of the profits since they didn’t make much upfront.
