Disability in Applications

Hi all. I have a health condition that leaves me confined to a wheelchair. I must do an hour of specialized exercise following each school day as well as being a team manager of Varsity soccer and baseball teams. I also participate in a baseball league for kids with disabilities and Model UN, as well as a School Current Events Club. I am unable to do much physical activity and rely on a 24/7 care team. In terms of stats, 4.43 W, 3.96 UW 1540 SAT, 770 BIO-E. I am a sophomore. How should I explain my situation to colleges when I apply?

You sound quite talented academically. You will no doubt find a good place.

I would suggest contacting the office for disabilities at several universities before applying. Most schools have such an office now, and they help accommodate physical disabilities as well as mental disabilities (providing a quiet room for exams, for instance). There are likely some schools that are more capable of handling your situation than others, so you will just need to ask about the type of accommodations they provide, and how to handle the application process.

Good luck!

  1. You should figure out what you need at college. What kind of support do you bring (care team) and what may be needed from the university (accessable classrooms, note taker? help with writing?).
So you may find it easier to look at colleges near home so it is easier for your care team. You should consider whether living at home would be the easiest for continuity of care.

  2. You would apply how you normally would apply. Your guidance counselor can add something about how you have health issues but how you have been involved in .
