Truth is that plumbers have no real need or desire to talk to elite college grads. Why waste your time on someone who is A) barely able to pay your bill, and B) too stupid to reattach the chain in the toliet tank?

"Although I don't agree with some of what he says, I do find it interesting and good to have another viewpoint on something that is so fiercely idolized here on CC (getting admission to the Ivies). All in all, it's very stereotypical and very general. It has its flaws, but it also has its grains of truth."

I emphasize the part about it being idolized here on CC. Before I came to these forums I didn't know that people made a big deal about going to a "prestigious" school

Excellent viewpoints here. I appreciate all the posters sharing them.

Honestly, I have met plenty of fantastic people who graduated from Ivy League schools. They have amazing careers and are amazing people. They contribute a lot to society and we are better because of them.

But yet, there are plenty of successful people who didn't go to an Ivy or a elite university. Yet they are also successful and self-confident.

While it's great to have elite university credentials, I do get annoyed when people REALLY make a big deal of them. Being Chinese, having a degree from Harvard is an absolute big deal in the Chinese community and there's tons of pressure on Chinese people to get Ivy League degrees. As you can guess, Chinese people worship Harvard grads like they are some sort of God. Unfortunately, the problem I see is that many Chinese or Korean kids who were high achievers in high school simply stopped trying once they got into Harvard/Yale/other elite/prestigious college. They KNOW they will get a good job in Asia (not necessarily in America) because in Asia, it's not about your individual skills, merit, or character. It's about what school you went to. That's why a ton of Asians once they go to Harvard/Yale/whatever elite college, they stop trying. instead of pushing to make themselves better, their ego gets inflated because they think that by virtue of their Harvard degrees, they can get whatever job they want or demand a high salary. They forget about what it means to have good character or to have desire or a strong work ethic. They think that the Ivy League degree is all the matters in life.

Ahhhhh Blastphemy
