Disappearing Classes on TeleBears? WHAT?

Hi, I registered for CS61A and Physics7A at CalSO, but when I went home and checked my Tele-Bears account, CS61A was gone from my registration, and I was only registered for Physics7A. I have since just added Math53 instead of re-adding CS61A but does anyone know what's going on here? Should I expect this to happen again in the future?

Maybe you didn’t confirm your selection of 61A properly? This should not happen.

Have you completed all necessary prereqs?

I thought TeleBears didn’t check for pre-reqs? I haven’t submitted my AP scores yet, and my CalSO counselor checked over my TeleBears after I registered for my courses to confirm that i DID actually register for them. Pretty weird, I’m just hoping it doesn’t happen again because apparently it happened to this guy: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/218857-i-hate-telebears-they-took-away-class-no-reason.html</a></p>

The only prerequisite is Math 1A, but that can be taken concurrently, so they wouldn’t kick you out for that.

That’s really strange though. Maybe we should all take screenshots of our telebears schedules in case something like this happens.

Must be pretty rare if the only other case you found was from 2006. Since both cases, if true, happened in CalSO, I’m curious whether somebody hacked your account and dropped it for you or some other obscure reason occurred. It seems more likely than a systematic error that only happened twice (documented) within 5 years.

Did you check on bearfacts instead of telebears? The information listing your registered classes on Bearfacts is fixed at about 8AM each morning, thus does not reflect anything you did during the day. You need to wait until the next day to see them properly.

I don’t think anyone would hack into my account and drop me from one class when its almost completely open? I always directly check on Tele-Bears and not Bearfacts, so I don’t think that’s the problem. I called Berkeley and they said that there may be bugs present if I press backspace or refresh too often during my registration. I think I did get an error message regarding CS61A when my session expired when I was idle for 10 minutes – I re-added the course after that message, but it may be why that course later disappeared even after it seemed like I had registered for the course (if that makes sense). If anyone has any other experience with this, that’d be great, I just don’t want it to happen again when the courses actually fill up in phase II.

Would it be possible for an advisor to kick you out of a class? as I am technically not supposed to take CS61A until much later on (I’m a BioE major but switching to EECS hence 61A first semester)

yes, it is possible to be dropped, althought it is not a very common event. Some of the extremely challenging classes, from a registration space sense, will have a departmental person who tosses out people. Bio 1A is one such course. They provide a web link to a department page that describes their additional requirements and restrictions. mcb.berkeley.edu/courses/bio1a/enroll For example, they strictly enforce pre-reqs - not telebears, but the person in the department, You enroll in the lab 1AL in phase I and in the lecture 1A in phase II. If you are waitlisted for lab, but can grab a seat in the lecture, they will drop you from 1A if the waitlist doesn’t clear by the first day of classes. If you have ever take the course before, but this is not your last semester at Cal, you will be dropped.

Fortunately, this is the exception, not the rule. In most classes no person looks, except perhaps the instructor or GSI right when classes begin. If they have a big waitlist, they might look to see who doesn’t meet the pre-reqs but usually they at least notify you giviing you a shot to argue your case. More often, nothing happens.

Advisors are unlikely to be involved in removing someone from a class they shouldn’t be in. That would generally be either a special person in the department hosting the class or the GSI/Prof of the class.

It is a common error to think you have completed registration for the last class of a group you are adding, but to have not actually completed the confirmation. Typically you can jump back then next day when you spot the problem and still grab a seat, but you could lose a chance at the better section or even be forced to the waitlist. It pays to triple check - perhaps by switching over to another semester view in telebears then switching back to see what classes come up. Only logoff when this is as you intended.

It happened to me in 2009. One of my classes (random breadth lower div) was dropped and a person from Telebears said I dropped it. However seeing as how I didn’t access telebears for like a month after I added classes because I went on vacation, I don’t think so. (I also have a printout which shows that I was registered for the class.)

If you got dropped, it will show. This is indeed weird, how is it today?

just checked my Tele-Bears and the courses are still there (for now)

is it possible that the class was cancelled?

i don’t think so. I signed up for the same exact lecture/discussion/lab again lol
