Discount travel for college students?

I'm trying to book a trip for my D to South America during her fall break and I was wondering if anyone had information about discounts that may be available for college students.

STA Travel is a travel service for students, and some flights are available at rates not available to the general public. There is also an International Student ID card (not sure if this is the right name) which entitles students to discounts on museums, etc. in many different countries. I am not sure how substantial the savinga are, but it is worth looking into.

My son used www.studentuniverse.com for a discounted ticket last year for his fall break. Just for students and faculty.

The international student ID card is awesome! D got hers before she left for study abroad. Just google it and it will direct you to find the nearest office where they are sold. Not only are there discounts to museums, etc., but also a free voice mail service, and it can be used as a phone card with calls at huge discounts.

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with South American travel but I just located a flight from OKC to Memphis for my D's best friend to visit less than two weeks from now and student universe was $377 all fees all done and everywhere else was at least $50 higher and in most instances a couple hundred higher (Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Kayak, Northwest, AA, cheaptickets, priceline). But OTOH when D went to Spain the cheapest was Cheaptickets. I think you have to check them all every time.

Lufthansa has a section of their website devoted to students - you have to register to get access. Also look at the "fly home" section of their site. Not sure about SA, but they have some excellent deals at times to less developed countries.

If you want to compare student prices that you find with what's available to the general public, the latter prices are comprehensively covered by www.itasoftware.com.

OT:

rainmama, that site made me feel even better. Studentuniverse beat them by over $300 on any flight without an overnight layover (and it beat their overnight layover by $50, too) .

Thank you for the info everyone! The Student Universe had the cheapest fares, even cheaper than all the other usual discount travel sites I normally check...but even that was too expensive for us, by the time you add the excursions we were interested in. I almost had her using frequent flyer miles to go, but she would have had to miss one day of school...can you believe she wouldn't miss a day of classes?! Wow, things have sure changed with college!
