@paveyourpath NJ checking in here (:. I visited around May, so there weren’t as many students as there usually would be, but the campus is absolutely gorgeous, very rustic and integrated with nature, being in an arboretum and all. The Scott Ampitheater in particular is like something out of a fairy tale. As a small school, it’s somewhat quiet but warm and homey in a sense. The science facilities that I visited were extremely modern it looked like, and the different indoor areas seemed updated recently. Overall, its extremely nice with a mixture of old and new (:.
Wow! Everyone sounds like they wrote such thought-provoking essays. I’m feeling a lot less confident about mine now…I think the structure of mine was interesting, but the content sounds like it was lacking compared to you guys! This and my low ACT score will probably mean a rejection for me, but oh well! I’m from Virginia here, and haven’t visited before (finances have limited my college visits to…Virginia). Hopefully we hear a response sooner rather than later, but I’m expecting sometime ~20th of this month.
Did anyone else apply to any other fly-in programs?
Hey, don’t count yourself out @berkdork ! I actually think its to your advantage that you have a much “lighter” topic as its a change in atmosphere from the other essay topics that’ve been given, which makes you stand out. These programs are all about diversity, so you definitely are in the running still, being in Virginia. I haven’t yet but am considering applying to the Haverford program, which coincidentally happens on the same month as one of the DiscoSwat dates, as well as the URochester one (:.
@exwire We lived in NJ! Now we live in NC. Campus sounds beautiful. Thank you for the description.
@berkdork I found the topic you chose for your essay thought provoking. The key to an essay is that it is on topic (your essay was), that it is interesting (sounds interesting based on your description) and it gives insight into your personality. Everyone’s essay will be different. There is no “right” answer on addressing the prompt. It’s an opportunity for admissions to get to know who you are. Don’t have writer’s remorse and start second guessing yourself or you will have a stressful application season. Hang tough!
@exwire Maybe worth applying to Haverford and URochester and then, depending on how things work out, pick strategically. Haverford and Swarthmore are ~20 minutes apart. If you get into only one of the programs, you won’t get the specific school experience but they are generally in the same area and that will give you a feel for the surrounding areas and whether you like the area. URochester being upstate is very cold even by NJ/ NY standards so would probably want to visit there if you could. Also depends where on your list these schools fall.
Wesleyan University in CT also has a fly-in program and is similar in size to Swarthmore. Wesleyan U has a pretty campus and is a very good LAC as well. I think the Wesleyan fly-in app is due mid-August but not sure.
Good luck to you both!
Thanks for the info @paveyourpath ! I really hope that at least one of them works out for me, I’ve always had a self-consciousness about my collegiate viability coming from a struggling school district, so attendance into any of these programs would be a major boost in morale, showing that I can, in fact, “make it.” Ugh, I’m so anxious to know the results ;______; the suspense is killing me!!
Hey! I’m Jasmine and I’m from Maryland. I wasn’t really looking at Swarthmore as a college option until I saw the Discover Swarthmore program. I really like the school and it kind of fits the criteria of what I look for in a college. I wrote my essay about the current political election and how it’ll affect undocumented immigrants like me throughout the U.S. I also applied to schools like Bowdoin, Colby, Middlebury, and Hopkins. I’m planning to major in bio/neuroscience with pre-med track!
Decisions are out! Accepted for the October dates.
@melllifluous Wait, what? You got an email?? I haven’t gotten one yet. Congrats though!
@berkdork I believe they are just sending the first batch of emails because some of my friends that also applied did not receive emails yet. Good luck!
@melllifluous When did you apply?
@applying2017 I sent the application in one day before it was due
Hey guys! Sorry I’m super late in joining the conversation. I started and completed my entire essay and application 30 minutes prior to the submission deadline :)) I’m still very impressed that I got that all done in the nick of time xD.
Anyway- accepted for the September session! I wrote about my insatiable curiosity that keeps me up at night. I compared the solitude of Night to the thought-provoking qualities of a shower in the beginning of my essay. I elaborated how the hours of Night give me ample time to explore various interests and profiles of my personality. It was a very fun prompt and I literally let the words flow out (since I was in a mad rush to complete it).
I live in PA! A little less than 2 hours away.
I can’t wait to meet those of you guys!
Congrats! Hopefully they send out the rest of the results soon!
Ugh now I’m concerned that they’re only sending out acceptances first and then rejects later ):. Hopefully I’m just being paranoid, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see. Congrats to everyone who got accepted so far though! Does anyone know if they sent out acceptances across multiple dates in past years?
I never posted on this thread-- anyways I got accepted to the September date! I can’t wait to meet you all!
Anyways don’t be paranoid if you didn’t receive an email yet, they’re probably still sending them out.
Did anyone make a Facebook group for Disco Swat 2016?
I was accepted for the October program date!
I honestly expected Swarthmore to send out emails near the 20th since that’s what they did in previous years. Don’t fret if you haven’t gotten an email yet, I’m sure they’re just making final decisions. I sent in my application a week before, but I don’t think the time stamp of your app makes a difference (given others’ time of submission).
Question: Are there any stats out there about the likeliness of being accepted into Swat if you attend the fly-in?
To any future applicants – I wrote about the brevity of life and how this makes me anxious given education isn’t yet equitable for all. I introduced my essay with a description of Earth being swallowed whole by a red giant; I know, I am a strange person. Also, I’m from a suburb in Ohio and will be traveling via plane.
Hope to meet you all there.
found the 2016 Disco Swat group for those that are interested.

Anyone else not get a response yet? The suspense is killing me! >.<
I haven’t received a response either. Maybe I’m impatient but I’d rather be notified if I was rejected or accepted asap. Seeing others get accepted and not even knowing whether or not you did kinda sucks
I feel like the fact that all of the responses in this thread have been acceptances is a little disheartening. I mean maybe if there was one rejection here, I’d have some hope, but at this point it’s looking pretty dismal…Oh well, there are much more important things to worry about in the world, though personally this saddens me because I won’t be able to visit at all, so this was my one and only chance to see the campus. A big congrats to everyone like I’ve said though, and I’m still holding onto a little piece of hope until I get that rejection email!
