Discover Swarthmore - Diversity Weekend

Who has gotten invitations to "DiscoSwat" so far? This looks really interesting!

I just want to put in a good word here for DiscoSwat and similar programs (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1065225586-post76.html</a>) at other LACs. For example, these programs can be one of the best ways to demonstrate interest and increase acceptance chances for an otherwise-overrepresented Asian applicant.

I applied to DiscoSwat last year and was not actually accepted, but nonetheless accepted to Swarthmore through EDII. And I made two friends from another LAC’s fall visit program who went to DiscoSwat together and will also be attending Swat.

What’s not to love about a paid opportunity to experience college life while a senior in high school!

I think that, for many students, these sneak peak programs make the transiton to college so much easier because, unlike “back in the day”, now you don’t have to dive into the dark unknown come September.

I could’nt agree more with Keilexandra and ID. From what I know, Swat puts a lot of effort into it. Student volunteers or people who house guests also put a lot of effort into it. Well worth the effort, imho.

I received my postcard the other day, I think I might apply for it

DiscoSwat was a really great program last year. I really encourage you all to apply.

Awesome! To all former attendees, what activities did you guys partake in throughout the weekend?

I second elbeeen’s question

My son got one (!!!) What are the odds of getting accepted to the weekend?

I’d like for my daughter to apply to this program. Looking beyond the name rep–another one of those amazing LACs. They’re putting out some great tweets to boot.

Anyone hear back yet?

^ Nope. I think I read they will be mailed out on the 4th?

Wow that’s really late for a program that starts in a few weeks!

I called yesterday to find out when word would be sent, and I was told that an acceptance email would not go out until September 7th or 8th- that they would not be notifying on the 4th as the original email had said.

Thanks for the information. Do you know if they send a letter to everyone (those not accepted as well as those who will be invited)?

ahhh mykonos you just ruined my day lol

and yepp, englishjw they definitely send a letter to everyone who applied!

aw man, i came on here to see if anyone had recieved their notification and Mykonos ended the excitement that I had for today.

Although, im still going to stake-out the mailbox. lol :)

^ haha same here :p

Haha. Sorry to rain on everyone’s parade!! I spoke to Stacy Jordan in the Admissions Office, who is the same person who sent out the email to us. She said that even though the email said the 4th, they extended it to the 7th and 8th, so we’ll get an email on one of those 2 dates if we’re accepted, and a letter will go out in the mail on those dates if we weren’t accepted. I did consider that maybe it was a ploy to keep people from calling them for information, so I’m checking my email, anyway. At least I know that if I don’t hear anything by the end of today, it’s not necessarily because I didn’t get in. Without this new info, it would have made for a very depressing Labor Day and for no reason! :-)

thanks for keeping us posted :D
