Futurity.org spotlights research from universities across the country -- and Rice's contributions are noted, week after week.

Just can't help tooting our horn: #2 research university in size, with a 5:1 ratio -- and #1 in quality of living. And the students at Rice are not only very smart, they're also very nice.

Excerpt from Futurity:

RICE (US)—A computer program is allowing researchers to accurately simulate protein folding dramatically faster than previous methods.

Understanding the intricacies of protein folding is a crucial step in deciphering the genetic code that serves as the operating system of all living things. Protein misfolding is a critical factor in many diseases, including Alzheimer’s, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, and various cancers. The new computer program will allow scientists to peer deeper into the roots of the diseases.

The researchers describe their simulation of three short proteins using the new technique in the cover story of the current Journal of Chemical Physics.

“Protein folding is regarded as one of the biggest unsolved problems in biophysics,” says Jianpeng Ma, who is a professor of bioengineering at Rice University and of biochemistry and molecular biology at Baylor College of Medicine. “This is a technically challenging task, and many groups around the world have been competing for years to make the process faster and more accurate.”

Rice research such as the salad spinner comes up frequently on Futurity.org.
Easy to join and fun seeing what’s going on at research universities across the country.

Thanks. You always have worthwhile reads Ottoline

I came across this, which I found to be interesting. Collaborative research between Rice, CMU and BYU

Thanks, Antarius. But it’s you and all the other great owls who share what’s going on and truly know Rice inside-out who really make this forum invaluable.

Reaching out to help the world again – this time with a special microscope…

This newsbreaker’s not about incredible microcopes or salad spinners –
it’s all about home videos …

[Futurity.org – With home video, content beats quality](With home video, content beats quality - Futurity)

this doesnt explain why anyone went to see Jonas brothers 3D… :P

… maybe, that’s the next frontier in video research.

May have noticed that I only post Rice success stories on this thread. I get a scoopful of breakthroughs from Futurity every morning and sift through them for Owl triumphs – and there are lots of them. That’s pretty amazing considering that Rice is the second smallest research university in the country!

Wondering about the other stories – why not subscribe and see what our peer schools
are coming up with, these days.
