Hello guys!
I’m an international student from Alexandria, Egypt. I’ll be starting Engineering at Bucknell University next fall, and I’m very excited. Yet there are a lot of decisions to make, and since I’m not going to the Open House, I won’t be able to get detailed answers for my questions or actually talk to someone who’d give me the best advice.
So, I, like all the student who have been admitted into Bucknell, have received an email encouraging me to join Residential Colleges. I had no idea what there were at the beginning, so I started learning about them, and I kind of liked the idea of joining one.
Yet, here comes my problem. I haven’t tried either Discovery or Society & Technology; I’ve just read about them. All what I’m sure of is that I’m very interested in sciences, that’s why I’ll be an Engineering major.
I love the fact that I’ll be living in McDonnell Hall if I choose Discovery, although I wanted a substance-free hall.
So what do you think is better?
Thank you!
Hi omareletr,
I probably can’t give you complete advice as I’m not yet a student of Bucknell, either. However I did attend the open house last weekend and looked through McDonnell Hall and it was superb. The rooms are nice and big, and there are two full common areas with televisions and everything on every single floor. The bottom floor has ping pong tables, as well. It was probably the best residence hall I’ve seen anywhere. I know it doesn’t answer your question, but I hope this helps give some insight into how living at Discovery will be.
Is Society and Technology at Smith Hall? If so, I also saw that, and it was quite nice but I would take McDonnell in a heartbeat.
Of course, a current student would give better advice than me so listen to any of them over me if they say otherwise.
I am a parent of a current Bucknell freshman who lived in McDonnell this year. McDonnell is a great dorm set up (those common rooms are awesome) and I highly recommend a residential college. Smith is also a good location – near both town and the student center and other dorms. I recommend that you both get on the class of 2019 bucknell facebook page and ask your questions there. I know the Junior Fellows for next year’s residential colleges (my D is one) are following that page and are available to ask questions. There isn’t a lot of traffic from current Bucknell students on this board, I think you will do better on facebook or simply going on the Bucknell website and getting in touch with next year’s Junior Fellows. The JF’s job is to help acclimate new students so they will be happy to give you advice/suggestions if you reach out.
