Discovery Weekend for RD Applicants

I know that Wash U tends to send out invitations to accepted students of color for a Discovery Weekend. Does anyone know if they do it for RD and ED together or just ED? Anyone get invites yet and know the date?

I believe it is RD only. ED accepted applicants are contractually committed. WashU doesn’t need to recruit them any more (discovery weekend from the school’s view is to recruit accepted students).

You’re talking about Celebrations Weekend (aka Multicultural Weekend). The invite comes with the RD acceptances (so mid-March-ish), and I believe onecot is right in that it’s RD only. The weekend purely exists as a recruitment tool, so I don’t see why ED kids would be invited (unless they think an ED kids’ excitement might help attract RD kids? but I doubt that).

FYI, Discovery Weekend is an entirely separate thing that occurs in late September.

Multicultural weekend coincides with the annual washu carnival. It is free transportation, food and lodging from thursday to saturday. ED and RD accepted applicants are invited. It is a recruitment tool but talking from experience EDs are also invited.

Thanks for the replies

I believe it’s for RD applicants only.

Is anyone planning to attend Celebration Weekend?

I am looking forward to it!

I’m an ED-er who received an invite.
@rower2013 yes! I’m going with my classmate who’s still on the fence about wash u (accepted RD). Plus, it’s a paid trip, why not take advantage of it?

I propose a cc meetup :)

Can anyone tell me when is the activity? I’m international and haven’t received my package. I don’t read anything about it on my generic online letter. Or maybe I’m not invited?

It’s April 11-13th, I believe (from what I remember). I think I’m going! I’m going to end up missing a couple of school days, but I’m just too excited to even care at this point! I think we get T-shirts? The form asked me what my size was…That’d be so neat! I’m 90% sure I’m going

I’ve read on some older threads that Wash. U makes you pay for the plane tickets after going to this event if for some reason you decide on not choosing Wash U. Is this true? I got accepted and I still don’t know if this will be the school I go to as I’m waiting on a couple more decisions. I don’t want to end up paying for the trip if I don’t end up deciding on this school…

You pay for the plane ticket if you cancel the trip after washu travel agency books it. But if you go and decide you do not like the school, no harm no foul. It is open to EDs and RDs applicant. Not everyone accepted get invited. Mostly minority but some caucaseans get invited when they indicated some mixed blood or involvement in minority groups during their application.

@zyl1024 I don’t think internationals are invited because of the plane ticket costs; I think I saw it on some other thread.

am i correct in assuming that they cover airfare going BOTH ways?

Is it just for students or are you supposed to come with your parents?

No, only one way. Extreme yield protection.

@unicameral2013 haha. that gave me a good chuckle

@unicameral2013 You made my day! That was a good one
