I have recently submitted over 10 college applications, with highlights on my work for this non-profit I work with in a foreign 3rd world country (school for underprivileged children).
UNFORTUNATELY, on my application where I calculated the exact numbers, I said that I raised $6750 within 4 months (the calculated specific numbers). HOWEVER, on my teacher and guidance recommendation letters, they said that I raised $5000 within 6 months (which was the safe ESTIMATE I told them about, not thinking they were gonna include exact numbers).
I am scared as $6750 within 4 months is both in my common app essay and extracurricular section, and it stands out. What will this discrepancy mean for my application? Will it raise a red flag? If they try to contact the organization, they probably won’t be able to because it is in the slums of a third world country and also is an international call with a different time zone…
But since OP previously mention an Ivy, it’s not a tip to (from another thread) raise money and visit this foreign school once/year. And, apparently have no service efforts in his own local community.
Understandable, but I do work around my local community and this third world country is my home country and I have found ways to get my peers involved with them. Lots of interesting work rather than simply raising money and visiting once a year, however thats the only discrepancy about my work with them.
That will be no issue at all. It would be reasonable that a teacher would have a ballpark amount, rather than the final amount. Plus in the eyes of admissions officers what you did, leadership characteristics you displayed, what you learned from the experience etc. is way more important than the exact amount of money that was raised. Honestly, don’t give it another thought.
