Dismissed / Barred / kicked out from UC, now transferring - need advice

I was Dismissed from a UC after the end of my first year with a cumulative GPA of about 1.0. I've meandered a bit and after a few years I've managed to bring up my cum GPA to 3.1.

It is my understanding that without a 3.5 it will be very hard if not impossible to get into a top 50 school.

When I apply to transfer this Fall 2011 I will likely have a cum of 3.4, excellent ECs, an SAT score of about 2100, SAT II of 750 & 800, and an excellent essay.

My question is: what top tier Universities should I apply to transfer and would likely accept me?
If you have had or are going through a similar experience, please advise.

Well how did you get a 1.0??? Did you just slack off?

1) How long have you been at a CC?

2) Whats your major?

You’re 25, so you meandered for seven years?

Hey, it worked wonders for Tom Riddle.

hisses - How dare you say the Dark Lord’s name?

hotdam,

Since you have managed to raise your GPA from 1.0 to 3.1, clearly you have been getting a lot of As. Gather up all of your transcripts, and pay a visit to your academic advisor (if you are at a 4-year institution), or to the Transfer Counselor (if you are at a community college). Talk your situation through with that person. He/she should have good ideas for you.

Wishing you all the best.

How do you define “top 50”? Santa Clara University is #2 Masters college in the West and is a great college but that doesn’t mean someone would consider it a top 50 college.

More importantly, can you afford to move anywhere to attend college? Can you afford any college, even if they give you near zilch in financial aid as a transfer student?

In any case, a lot of privates would accept you (not necessarily a top 50, but that is a sort of random phrase since not everyone agrees on the rankings). If you don’t need any FA, you are in even better position.

The more elite colleges might look at you if you somehow really tickle them with your essays–but that is not a formulaic thing or something you can count on, either. You clearly can do the work, you have figured out college, and some privates are really open to that. However, it is impossible to guess which ones.

Are you just looking for prestige? You’d be better off matching yourself to a program at a very good/strong school–chances are the college will better see how you are a “fit” for their college and your intellectual passions will shine through (which leads to admissions).

Simply applying to elite schools willy nilly seems a terrible way to manage your transfer experience. I urge you to think more holistically about your education rather than buying a pair of jeans for the brand-tag vs. the actual fit.

Boys and Girls, Thank you for all the replies.

Clarifications: 25 is how old I would be if I used my fake id. I’m 21. My freshman year was at UCSC and getting a 1.0 is easy if you sign up for a class and never show up.

I’ve been at CCs for 3 years.

My major is flexible; I love History, Philosophy, Poli Sci and Anthro. I have completed most of the pre requisites for these majors and I figured Humanities/Social Sciences were strongest at a “Top 50 school”. I’m hoping to double major (I want a nice shirt too, annikasorrensen).

Financial Aid is an issue but it’s something I’ll worry once I am admitted. I’ve seen friends getting full rides from Ivy’s and others dropping out because of financial reasons so I know it can be a limiting factor but I won’t let it deter me now.

And as for the academic advisers, I’ve found them to be useless. I understand that you have to go through a dozen before you find a good one, I’m just getting a second opinion.

Hot Damn!

Are u going to apply to any Uc’s? I think you have a shot at UCSB and UCSD.

Privates, well there is USC :)

I like your style, kid.

Anyway, I tend to be more of an optimist when it comes to these threads. I’m applying to colleges with a dismissal as well, although it was in reference to high school. You will need to watch out and address the following things:

1.) Most of the Top 50 schools use the Common Application. You need to write a meaningful essay for the “disciplinary” sections or else it’s game over, brah. Spend a good couple of months on this proofreading. Be sure to state what happened, take responsibility (in my case I was wrongly accused), explain what you learned from it, and explain how it will never happen again. Of course, actions speak louder than words, and you went from a 1.0 to a 3.0+. I got admitted as a transfer to W&M and a couple other places from a non-ranked, regional LAC.

2.) Your non-GPA stats are good, and everything looks great. Go for teh top 50 brah, and don’t look back. But that being said, apply to the sub-50 as well since you never know what’ll happen. There’s a lot of school that have great aid, such as Emory and Vanderbilt, so look into them as well.

3.) Third, and finally, always remember…

**THIS

IS

SPARRRRRRTAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!**

I mean, *College Confidential.

We’re always here to help.

God be with you,
Godric

Well yes, I’m planning to apply to the UCs and I will get into most of them because there is a Transfer Agreement between the California CCs and their big brothers: the UCs (it’s all part of the same system - ish).

Getting into UCLA is going to be almost impossible and I shouldn’t even consider UCBerkeley. It’s a numbers game and the cutoff is likely a 3.6-3.7 for most competitive majors at both schools. A 3.4 GPA would secure me a place in the reject pile before they even read my essay. To top it off, the UC’s don’t look at SATs, which would give me a boost otherwise.

USC is an option although the price tag is a tad steep, non-money making majors are not as good as other schools of the same rank (aka the stuff I’m into) but all in all it would be a better bet for me.

Obviously I’m planning on applying to all. I would like to hear more options outside my comfort zone ie Emory and Vanderbilt, which I’ll surely look into (THANKS GodricGryffindor).

Hotdam,

Good luck with everything. Try to bring your GPA to a 3.6 like you said, get involved in the community, and see where u get accepted. what major would u like to apply for?
