Dismissed from University

Hey Guys,

I just received the news that I have been dismissed from my University, I am attending John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. They are known for their accreditation issue sent by the higher learning commission. I am an International Student holding an F-1 Visa right now and I just finished my first semester of my sophomore year. This happened mainly to depression as my close friend committed suicide and it has affected me for a long time. I feel stupid for not asking for help and holding the burden to my self.

I have talked to other people and the dean and what they told me is to go to a CC, however, if I am going to a CC I will not be applying back to my current University. Being the first in the family to attend College in the US, is it possible that I apply to a CC and transfer to another school?

Also, when applying to a CC, do I apply as a transfer for are there any special admission requirements?

Thank you for your help guys.

@babyshinchan - The best advice I can give is to see someone in the university advising office and discuss with them, first, whether you can APPEAL your dismissal. Most universities allow students to explain their situations and to tell how they will remedy them. Second, you can discuss how you carry over credits you’ve earned to a new college. Do not just seek advice on this board. You really need to speak with someone who can explain your options to you.

  1. Were you medically diagnosed with depression? If not, have you seen or will you see a doctor? If so, then you may be able to get a retroactive medical withdrawal.
  2. Have you seen a doctor? Is your depression under control? What evidence do you have?
  3. Can you appeal your dismissal?

A successful appeal must do several things:

  1. show that you understand what went wrong
  2. show that you take responsibility for the academic failures
  3. show that you have a plan for future academic success
  4. in a broad sense, show that you are being honest with yourself and the committee

Here are some examples:

Some of this is general, and some specific to your situation.

  1. search this topic on CC and you will see many other posts on academic appeals
  2. Make sure your letter states what the issue was that caused you to have academic difficulties
  3. Did you talk to your professors/dean of students about the issue?
  4. Did you make use of the many resources your school has? if not, why not?
  5. Find out what those resources are…e.g. counseling center, talking to professors, talking to your adviser, withdrawing from class, talking to dean, maybe taking incompletes,
  6. State how you would use those in the future
  7. How are you addressing what caused the issue? Have you addressed the depression?
  8. Think about if you should continue at college, or take a break.
  9. Think about if you should continue at a community college, to be close to your family
  10. How is your college funded? Will that continue?

In general, keep in mind what the college wants…they want students who can succeed. They need to know that you understand what the issue was, know now the resources that you can use, how the problems is resolved so you will not have academic issues in the future. Also I am not sure if visa issues come into account.

Talk to admissions at the CC. Usually they allow anyone in.

@bopper
Thanks so much for the feedback, I am not medically addressed as I have never talked to anyone about it, just kept it to myself admitting everything is fine and I’m finally being honest that it is impossible.

I’m looking for CCs (mainly around Los Angeles and Bay Area) as it is close to my relatives who live in California. I’ve tried to apply online to 1 CC as a transfer student (Santa Monica College) however my application was denied stating it is due to my GPA. Therefore I’m afraid that this might be the end of my education path.

My parents are the one funding my college and this will continue. As an International as the first one to go to the US in the family, I feel lost and I feel very disappointed with myself.

You should try to apply to another CC. Some of them won’t care as much about your college GPA. After you get good grades there, you will be in good standing and can apply to another four year college.

@CheddarcheeseMN
do I apply to the CC as a transfer student or a fully new admitted student?

You are a transfer student. You will need to provide the new CC with your transcript.

@CheddarcheeseMN thanks for the info. Appreciate it

Go get help from your international students office. You aren’t the first person to be in this situation. They will be able to give you some good ideas.

If you are in the US right now, you have to move very fast about this.your F1 status is related to your college enrollment. If you aren’t in college somewhere veryquickly, you will lose your status and you will need to leave.
