How far is too far for someone who would want to come home maybe once or twice a month for a weekend? The schools that I'm looking at are between 15 min and 5.75 hours away......

It really depends on how much you want to spend for gas. I’d say around 2-3 hours is a reasonable distance.

But my question is why on earth would you want to go home? I’m not looking forward at all to having to go home for thanksgiving and winter break.

I’m pretty close with my family :)

Yeah, I suppose. If you’re only going home every few weeks or so, then 2-3 hours would be good. But don’t go home too often. You want to be around for all the fun things that happen over the weekend.

Yeah, if you go home too often you’ll miss out on a lot. Unless you go to a commuter school, I guess.

I’m about 2 hours away from home, and I’ve only gone home once, but I know people who are the same distance away who’ve gone home more than that. So honestly, I think 2 is ideal, and 4 would be the max if I wanted to go home that much, but that’s kinda pushing it.

I’m about 90 minutes from home, and I haven’t gone home yet (freshman this year). I’m quite close to my family, and being a short distance from home was certainly something I considered when picking colleges. However, don’t be surprised if you don’t want to go home that often. I thought I’d want to go home more often, but I guess I ended up loving my college more than I thought I would. :)

No more than 3 hours

I’m a 5 -12 hour plane ride depending on if it connects or not.

is a commuter school where most people drive in?

Yeah, a commuter school is one where most people live at home or go home every weekend.

I live about 1 1/2 hour away, and I’ve gone home both weekends so far, but mainly just to pick up/buy anything I forgot. Throughout the rest of this quarter, I’ll go home maybe once a month, max.

Dad here: my son is 5.25 hours from home. We have visited him once since August 16th, we will go back Oct 21st for family weekend, he will come home for Thanksgiving and come home for xmas on Dec 14th or so.

It has been perfect. Of course he misses us and we miss him. I agree that going home is counterproductive takes too much time away from school work. My son is majoring in Engineering and it is not easy.

IMO being too close to home could be a bad thing but a 5 hour plane ride is a bit far unless you get admitted to Stanford then u have to go.

That’s a good point!!!
