Distribution Requirements

Obviously, the requirements for 2 arts, science, etc... classes are pretty straightforward, but what exactly do the World Civilization and Culture Option areas require? Do courses overlap to fill multiple areas and how many classes do you need to satisfy a World Civ./Culture distribution?

It sounds confusing, but its really not so bad. World Civ requires 2 classes that focus on non-US, non-European culture (note: a class focusing on non-European populations within Europe or the U.S. also counts) and can overlap with just about anything at all. Comparative Middle Eastern Politics and The Hispanic Diaspora in the United States did it for me.

The Culture Option is an alternative to a fourth, fifth, and sixth semester of language study, and can be tested out of by students with advanced language proficiency. If you can’t test out of it, it can be fulfilled with just about any class with a component of culture that is anything other than white Americans. This includes German philosophy, French film, Arabic poetry, African-American literature. . . its pretty broad.

Ah, alright. Thanks so much! I’ll probably be taking six semesters of language anyway, so it sounds like I won’t even have to worry about the Culture Options program.

Actually, the world civ requirement only requires one course.

Really? Did they recently change it? I think it was two when I was a freshman, but I wouldn’t swear by it.

Not sure if they changed it not, but that’s what it is now! And really cool things can satisfy it too, such as Intro to World Music, a course that I’m in now.
