Diversity at Boston College?

Hi! I was accepted to BC for the class of 2021. BC has always been my first choice, but I have also heard that it is not the most diverse or integrated school. I am Hispanic and not exactly rich, so I am concerned about whether or not I will fit in/have opportunities to explore my own culture. If there are any current BC students of color who could share a bit about their experiences it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This concern is shared by many entering freshman in your position. The answer is: “It’s totally up to you.”

Here is a thought to consider.

  • Are you seeking a school where you can be safe and comfortable in groups of people all like you?
  • Or would you rather spend your next four year years making new friends with people from all walks of life?

It’s true BC is not known for its deep diversity, but it has enough and what it does have can be viewed as an opportunity for you, rather than a concern.

Conquering that will feel like a “reach” at first, but you will soon be so happy you did.

Well I’m not so much of a current student so much as an incoming student but this is what I have gathered…

A little about me, I’m Hispanic (dominican, gudetaman, PR) and black (African + some Haitian roots) and I got some Spanish in me (Italian). I’m also a women and one of seven children with a family earning of 12k yearly. So yeah I’m nothing like the typical BC student (esp since I openly identify as an atheist).

Due to my ethnicity I’m considered an AHANA student (African/Hispanic/Asian/Native American) and was invited to BC to attend the AHANA Weekend in April. Basically all people who fit AHANA are welcomed and for them to connect. They had diverse foods, performers, and art available. They paired us up with current ahana students and they were able to give us insight on life as an ahana student.

From all this, including some AHANA housing available, I feel like BC recognizes the lack of diversity and is actively trying to change this. The 2021 class is the largest AHANA class ever.

According to my AHANA host, she says that you will be surrounded by mostly privileged white people but that there are many outlets available to connect and get in touch with AHANA background…

If you were admitted into the OTE program this is another way in which is AHANAS can connect.

Hope this helped a little!

Thank you! I couldn’t make it AHANA weekend which is why I was so unsure of going in blind, but this definitely made me feel better

BC does try a lot, however, the lack of diversity is noticeable. Just a walk around campus, it is very clear what type of people attend BC. AHANA does help, but it doesnt do enough I feel. Actually, there was a rally, but BC actually put an end to it.
