Diversity at MiamiU

I just visited miami u on freshman move in day and i loved it and even then i know all students weren't on campus but while i was there i noticed there wasn't much diversity. Can anyone tell me how the ratios of different ethnicities typically are when all students are on campus? I myself am an african american female and love all people but i just was wondering how many people of minority ethnicities attend the university.

Do you go to miami u, or know anyone that does, because I heard the university was also clique-ish and wanted to know if that was true?

Sorry, no firsthand experience. I’m just the mom of a former prospective student.

Miami has about 15,000 kids. If it is 5% black, there are 750 black kids. Every black kid I saw on campus was clean cut and polite, just like all the white and asian kids. A very large percentage of all of these kids were in the top 10% of their class. Where there is a lack of diversity is in that most of these kids were raised attending good suburban high schools with parents who valued education and wanted them to get a lot of personal attention at a state school. There is also not a lot of drug use. Don’t let some weird perception that you have to have a high percentage of any “kind of student” to get a good education. You don’t. If you are a polite, well-educated, high school senior who likes people, and who has ambition, this might be a good school for you. Through orientation and move-in, I met a lot of black kids on campus. They were all friendly, clean cut and sharp. And they seemed totally comfortable around white people. How exactly is that bad? I hear over and over about the lack of diversity at Miami. It forces this awesome school down in the rankings. There is nothing “bigoted” about Miami causing this. What is causing this is the constant refrain about how there is a lack of diversity.

It is great in Greek. So, if you want to join particular group, join frat./ sor. My D. was in sorority and loved it.

BTW, nothing forces it down in the ranking, #2 in undergraduate teaching for second year, yes, beating Harvard too!!!

No, I mean when Miami falls below IU in B-school rankings…which is ridiculous on its face. Miami offers so much more personal attention in a setting that is simply more conducive to academics. I WENT to IU. Kids at Farmer have so much more. My son’s classes are SOO small as an honors business student. less than 20 kids in 4/6 of them. His “large” lectures have 30-40. It’s an amazing school. Impossible to believe it’s a public.

^That is why Miami is #2 in undergraduate teaching nationally.

Who said anything about Miami U being a place for bigots? Methinks you’re a bit too defensive Debrockman. The OP simply made an observation about what she perceived to be a relatively small population of African American students. Why all the innuendo about “clean cut” and drug use?

Because it’s true. This is the cleanest cut student body I have ever seen. Just got back from another weekend there. Saw lots of Asian, Indian and Black kids. There is plenty of diversity at MU. Miami is always knocked for its lack of diversity and the truth is, there’s a bias against it because the kids, by and large, aren’t liberal. That’s the diversity people have a problem with. My mother made a comment this weekend about how well-adjusted and friendly the kids seemed to be. Not alot of angsty types here.

And my comment about drug use was geared at IU. MU is not the place for drug use. They will not tolerate it. If you’re caught, you’re gone. And since they had their recent embarassing drinking “press”, there’s a lot more emphasis on keeping kids from drinking than in the past.

“clean cut blacks” Were they “articulate” too? “lack of angsty types” “well adjusted suburban kids”

Congrats to debrockman for reinforcing every negative stereotype about Miami University that’s out there with these asinine comments.

Note: I did not say clean cut blacks. I said, clean cut kids. And they weren’t angry, like redskins4ever, who would not have chosen Miami.

I did notice that the black kids were running in packs WITH the white kids. Which is not typical of many schools where there may be more black kids, but they were running in segregated packs.

^^That’s stupid.

Anyway, as a current student at Miami it’s not very diverse at all. There are a lot of white, middle to upper middle class students and it’s something that everyone is aware of. The school is making efforts in getting more international students on campus so there is a growing amount of Chinese students but they mostly tend to stay with each other with a few exceptions that I’ve seen.

A lot of people here look a like. Black, white, Asian, Hispanic, etc. A lot of the girls look exactly like each other in that they are dressed up with a face full of make up going to 8am classes. So diversity in a cultural sense, financial, racial, ethnic, religious, etc. is very low. It’s strange at first, but you get used to it.
