Diversity at Notre Dame

I’m from a super diverse city, and I know Notre Dame is predominantly white, so I was just wondering if I could hear a few opinions- do minorities at Notre Dame feel oppressed at all? I’ve heard that minorities tend to clump (which does make sense), but I was just wondering what the dynamic is like, as I’ve always grown up with a LOT of diversity. PSA THIS POST IS NOT MEANT TO BE INSULTING TO NOTRE DAME AT ALL I GET THAT DIVERSITY IS HARD AND I LOVE THE SCHOOL IM JW.

Not much diversity at all and they deffinitely clump together, like theres a latino house and stuff. most of the minorities are athletes too

*Yeah, diversity is not a strength of Notre Dame. That said there is big push by the university to remedy this but its an uphill climb. I went to a predominantly white high school so I am used to being a minority but some of my other friends who came from more diverse backgrounds had trouble adjusting in the beginning. You can find people with amazing life stories here but I am not going to lie to you and say that ND is just brimming with diversity.
*There are many events on campus that celebrate diversity, including some that sell out incredibly fast.

  • Students do clump together (especially international students), but in general Notre dame students are exceptionally friendly so if you put in the effort it is not hard to become friends with people of all different backgrounds if you put in the extra effort
  • In terms of diversity in thought I would say that notre dame is no “liberal bubble” as they like to say in the news. There is a lot of civil discussion and disagreements about topics in my own friend group and I definitely regard this as a positive. Certain issues are a lot more sensitive on campus, (like abortion) but if approached with the appropriate sensitivity you can have many interesting conversations.

There is a tiny bit of diversity at Notre Dame. The students don’t necessarily clump together, but they do rely on each other for support that there are others like them at the university. The largest minority is Hispanic, next being Asian, and last being African American. The minorities do intermingle and try to rely on all minoritiss together.

The Notre Dame family is making the effort on this front. I thought this was a good article…

Every human being is different. Why don’t we take the first step and stop focusing on race?
Diversity could be of political opinion, taste in music, book choices, fashion preferences, faith, etc.
It shouldn’t be about skin color but content of character (I think someone remarkable said that!)
