<p>I've heard comments about UVA being a "white school" and I want to know how true that is. I have looked at some stats but it's difficult to really judge unless you are actually in that environment; for example, I live near UNC-Chapel Hill and it apparently is mostly white, but it doesn't seem like that to me.
So I guess I'm wondering whether how diverse UVA "feels" to a student who goes there. Now only race-wise, but also socioeconomically, politically, etc. Thanks!</p>
<p>There have been a lot of discussions about this in the past if you search for past threads. UVA can be as diverse as you allow it to be, or vice versa – many choose to self segregate.</p>
<p>From what I’ve seen, it’s mostly Whites and Asians, some Blacks and very few Hispanics. Hazel is right though, you can make it diverse or you can segregate. My group of friends is really diverse but I’ve seen all white/black/asian groups too.</p>
<p>There are 14,000 undergraduates here and there’s quite a bit of variety.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that Virginia is a state with many government and military families. There are students here who might look like everyone else in jeans and sweatshirts, but they might have grown up on the other side of the world. I have found Virginia to be a pretty eclectic place.</p>

<p>I believe you will find much more diversity in incomes at UVa among US students than at many other selective universities. This is caused by: 1) affordable in-state tuition, and 2) the fact that UVa meets 100% of the proven need of in-state and out-of-state US students. Also, UVa has need-blind admissions. Most public universities do not provide need based aid to out of state students - they look at them as cash cows.</p>
<p>People have said that the international students at UVa tend to be very wealthy, unless their own government is paying their way.</p>
<p>Virginia now has a large Latino population, but there are many recent immigrants from less developed countries who are less likely to be in a position to be competitive in admissions.</p>
<p>I’ll be honest, UVA has a lot of Whites and a lot of Asians. And at first glance, that’s all you see. But UVA is much more diverse than that.</p>
<p>1) There is a decent-sized Black/African/African-American community, which is pretty close-knit. I’m Black; I know. LOL.</p>
<p>2) The Latino community, based on my observations, is small. </p>
<p>3) All racial groups tend to self-segregate, but many many many people have diverse groups of friends. Honestly, it’s difficult not to when you’re at UVA–especially once you start getting involved with different clubs/activities/events.</p>
<p>4) From my observations, there are a lot of international students, which makes UVA so cool. You’ll–no doubt–hear several different languages just walking around central grounds. I have quite of few friends in the IRC (International Residential College). I would call them out, but I wont. LOL!</p>
<p>5) UVA is economically diverse! I’ll just say this: UVA’s financial aid = AMAZING! AccessUVA = AMAZING!</p>
