Diversity Club?

I've been in my (nearly all-white, rather affluent) high school's Diversity Club for all four years, and I am now on the Leadership Ring.

For those of you that have Diversity Clubs at your schools, what do you do?

All that we seem to do is talk and talk and talk. We never get anything substantial organized. (And our advisor is kinda clueless, but thinks she knows everything.) We want to consider all aspects of diversity (race, socioeconomic class, gender, and other things that aren't quite as obvious based on outward appearance). My school just doesn't get it, and we're taken as a joke.

Part of the problem is that GSA gets all the attention. We do "Day of Silence" and other such events with them, but they get all the glory. We may be hosting a school-wide masquerade ball in the spring.

I'm just curious what other DCs do... I'd love to do something radical, like organize a huge protest of some sort of something... but I'd settle for any form of action :)

have like a talent show but have an intermissoin to talk about your club and what your trying to do...umm maybe have a table out side your cafeteria about that kind of stuff too.

Thanks for the reply!

We did have a table outside of the cafeteria to hand out our "Speak up... even if your voice shakes" pins.

I'm not too worried about recruitment though... I just want to know what other Diversity Clubs do together.

Hey..im a co-president of my diversity club. some stuff we do:

mix it up day - sit with random people you dont know during lunch and just get to know them

have group discussions about diversity, stereotypes

first impression - get a group of people who don't know each other, one person gets up front, and the audience shouts out what their first impression of the guy is....repeat with everyone

talk to freshmen and get them interested in diversity in general

*Diversity week - theres a new activity each day (usually during lunch), so it'll be like M - Fashion Show, T- Different foods to try, W - Dance videos, etc.

*Diversity Assembly - an assembly that represents the different cultures represented in the school at the end of diversity week.

*They sometimes asks kids questions about their backgrounds and play the video during lunch during diversity week (i.e. - what is your definition of diversity, how connected are to you to your background, etc.)

*Watch movies from different cultures and in different languages

& I'm not even in Diversity club, haha.
I guess it helps that our school has lots of diversity...
